Thompson Statement

Wasn't on here for most of yesterday because of work commitments - I didn't actually see this statement until yesterday evening.

For those that missed it:

"As Chairman of the Club, I would like apologise to all Dundee United supporters for the abysmal performance last night against Motherwell. The current position at the bottom of the Ladbrokes Premiership is wholly unacceptable. It is not where Dundee United should be under any circumstance.

“The board and myself have made certain decisions in the last eighteen months which in hindsight were incorrect but were made for the greater good of the Club and with the ambition of maintaining our position at the top of Scottish football, something we have done successfully for the last eight years. This included supporting a playing squad that commands the third highest wage bill in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

“However, we have failed miserably on the pitch with only three wins in 25 league matches and an early exit from the League Cup. Performances such as last night simply cannot be tolerated. The current playing squad now have thirteen matches to preserve the Club’s premiership status and redeem their own professional reputations."

This statement is, in my opinion, an absolute disgrace and yet another PR disaster from the club.

The way that Thompson refuses to take responsibility for the state of the club is simply astounding. He's the chairman - it's ultimately him who has to take the flak. He's certainly fast enough to take the credit during the good times. The line about "the board and myself" is a total cop out where he tries to apportion blame out equally. No Thompson, it's ultimately you that has to accept responsibility.

He's also completely thrown Mixu under the bus with this - again, his appointment - and his position is untenable now. The decision to give Mixu a 3 year deal is just incredible now in hindsight.

It wouldn't have taken much for this to be a decent enough statement. A wee line like "as a club we have made a number of mistakes, but as chairman I am ultimately responsible. I can only apologise and assure the fans these mistakes won't be repeated and we will work tirelessly to turn this club around" would have been easy enough to put in and would have looked a hell of a lot better than what was said.

We're a shambles from top to bottom.

Dennis - my view has always been that if a club liquidates they should start at the bottom. It doesn't matter if it's Rangers, Cowdenbeath or United. There shouldn't have been any further punishment imo. Yes, punish clubs for going into admin with points deduction, but being put to the bottom of the pile is punishment enough for liquidation.

I've sung the songs at Rangers - you're not Rangers anymore etc

But then I've also sang "same old Rangers, always cheating".

I don't ultimately care if you're the same club or not. I still hate Rangers the same way I always have.

"They were also charged the equivalent of 1.5 games, which is what they actually saw"

.....and therein lies the problem

In that season, United took in the income generated from an extra half game

Considering it was the Tannadice pitch that failed, United should have footed the bill

No other club got the chance to make extra money from ticket sales becoz their pitch got waterlogged... United did

That is profiteering

That is Stephen Thompson

"Rangers did not liquidate, have not liquidated and may in fact never liquidate"

True, they straight up died.
