More than 30 games have been played and so around this time lower profile teams have hit the 40 points target or are nearly there.
There are those whose primary target is to get 40, usually newly promoted and teams who just about avoided relegation the previous season. But what about those that are good enough not to be drawn into relegation battles for too long ie Chelsea or WBA, but aren't quite as good to push for top half or top 8?
How is there success measured? These clubs often get overlooked because they are just there. No European places to compete against or any relegation battles to look forward to. I think this is where a lot of averages managers end up, but amongst them some substandard ones that make their team stale. There are those that are way out of their depth for PL, I don't mean those. I mean guys like Allardyce and Pulis. These two are so unambitious in everything that they've been regarded as survival managers. I guess it's OK to have them on a temporary basis but there guys will always do enough to stay up but stay there and not move on. I thought WBA took on Pulis on a temporary basis, and they should've. Sure their managerial recruitment was poor before him, but the style of football they play it is atrocious.
It gets to the point where you have to say thank you for getting us 40 this year but next season we need to push up, and this guy isn't going to get you that. West Ham fans had enough of Big Sam last season because they felt that were good enough to push higher and he limited them. Now they're in a good shout for top 4!
With PL survival more important than ever due to the money, you cannot forever say target is 40. Everyone is looking to move up the table. Leicester have blown everything out of the water, there's no team in the league who should limit themselves to survival mode for more than 2 seasons.
Now WBA players won't bother playing competitive. They're already thinking about holidays, their manager came out said so himself that the season target has been achieved. I think Pulis is one of the least ambitious managers in PL. Stoke have kicked on after he left them and play million times better too.
I don't see why WBA cannot go & get top 10 place, even a European spot. Every one has equal resources now, there's no longer any reason for the board of any PL club to just stay content with PL survival. Teams like Leicester and WHU pushing up raises their profile, hence their global brand. Other teams have to look at these clubs and also do the same. The PL is known to be the best league entertainment wise, and guys like Pulis and Big Sam have no place here other than to stay up and move on asap.
Most substandard PL managers

Pearson and Alladyce wouldn't have been sacked by most clubs based on performance, given the did a safe job.
Though I know Pearson had other issues.
But both have reaped the rewards of aiming high and fair play to them.
Wish wolves had done the obvious with McCarthy at the right time with hindsight.

I cringed when I heard Pulis talk about the 40 points target the other day. They were last out of the league 6 years ago and have had mid-table finishes practically every season. 40 points is still the pre-league target? Really?
I'd be so underwhelmed as a fan. No wonder Pulis's teams do very little than finish around 10th when that is the extent of the ambition.

What I don't get about managers like Pulis is, as bad as Martinez is, I would rather scrape 40 points whilst playing good football than hoofball.
If you aren't ambitious or playing good football, whats the point?

Martinez has at least proved he can be more than an average manager. Just needs someone to smack him around the head over his defensive management and misguided hype around his players.

has he...he's doing a poor job for me.
and set himself right up with his we have 4/5 world class players or some such waffle.....
oh yeah mate....then why are you closer in points to the relegation zone than you are the top 6....
used to really like him....but like Rodgers he's turning into a bit of a david brent....!!!!

He is doing poor this season no question. He's still managed to get a 5th place finish on over 70 points, an FA Cup QF and SF, all in the 3 seasons at Everton, and then already won the FA Cup with Wigan. It shows he is capable of being good.
If he can ever work out what to do with the defence, and to be fair he's still quite young in managerial terms, he'll be singing.

Pulis has finished all nine seasons in the PL between 11th and 15th and this will be his 10th. No ambition whatsoever. He's good for any team looking to establish themselves in the league and then fook him off for someone to take them to the top 10.

That said Flores and Howe have done it by playing good football, something Pulis has never done.
I also think the WBA board lack ambition and are happy to keep raking in the coin and being mediocre. I'd hate to be a WBA fan, must be so shiiitt!

What on earth is this utter waffle

Pulis is an emergency manager, a firefighter. His teams are solid and hard to beat, but flatline at midtable.
I'd rather get relegated, then sack him
