Bury v ROVERS

This weekend is make or break for the team, there are 18 points to play for, but we MUST win at Gigg Lane to have any chance of staying up.

I am going to start and I make no apologies for doing so, with a COMMENT from Paul Goodwin which appeared in Thursday's Free Press.

To the players of Doncaster Rovers - the very least you can do in these final six games is to stick out your chests and show some fight and pride in the badge.

You should not be in this position and it's nothing short of a travesty you are where you are in the League One table.

For three different managers this season, you have underperformed, both individually and collectively.

You are in the midst of one of the worst runs of form in the club's 137 year history and that should be eating away at you as it is the supporters.

All hope is not yet completely lost. You have to believe that survival is still possible.

You are not entirely to blame for this. The whole club has to take collective responsibility for the position it now finds itself in.

However, this is not a time for shirking responsibility or passing the buck.

YOU have the chance of dragging Doncaster Rovers out of this horrible mess and saving us from the third relegation in FIVE seasons.

The display at Rochdale last weekend was all that anyone could ask of you. To show some fight, some spirit and some gumption.

That level of commitment ought to be a gimme every time you cross the white line.

For six more games - wherever your individual futures might lie beyond this season- all the Rovers fans want from you is to wear their colours with pride and do everything in you power to try and rescue this wretched campaign.

If you go down from here, make sure you go down fighting. That is the least you owe people. Don't give up until is is mathematically impossible. Anyone who has followed Rovers knows all too well that anything is possible.

Good luck.

I think this is self explanatory so I will not add to it.

Darren Ferguson says that last week he was pleased with the performance if the final result was not what we wanted. " The law of averages says that you are going to win games off the back of that performance".

The players who went off last week, Lund and Calder have both trained and are available, MacKenzie has trained also. The only absentees are Alcock ( suspended) and Keegan whose season looks to be done.

Bury were unlucky not to win last week and we have to make sure that we play to our capabilities, and show fight, determination and a desire to win.

By the way, Curtis Main is not responsible for us losing 15 games, some people seem to think that, he is not with us, we have lost those games.

Ferguson was also very complimentary about the way fans have stuck behind the team and they really appreciated the applause at the end of the Rochdale game in particular.

Hound

I have just posted on VSC that we need a Football Director Hound to take some of the pressure off the manager ( whoever he is) and this could be done by getting rid of Paul Butler. How the hell he has lasted as long as he has as First team coach baffles me.

Wilfreda have better coaches than him, whoiever the nmanager is means I am not bothered if Ferguson is not here.

Fergie chose to keep him on Yankee.

I just don't feel we get any benefit from him Hound.

A few stats – draw your own conclusions – regarding our 3 managers this season

Pl W D L F A Pts
PD 06 1 3 02 03 05 06
RJ 06 1 2 03 06 10 05
DF 29 7 6 16 32 44 27

Points per game
PD 1.00
RJ 0.83
DF 0.93

Goals scored : goals conceded per game
PD 0.50 : 1.00
RJ 1.00 : 1.67
DF 1.10 : 1.51

It makes for depressing reading. The common factor in all of this of course is the coach, so let’s make him the scapegoat. After PD of course.

As for proper stats, anyone like to go the road of Midtjylland? There are some interesting bits in the article (at least they are to a boring old sod like me).

I like the piece in The Guardian Pirate. Managers bemoan conceding from set pieces, but the stats effectively show that they are harder to defend than open play.

We had 20 (set piece) corners and got the ball in the net once. This is surely an area that the coach should be working on, the man sacked at Oldham before Dickov himself walked.

As Hound says though, DF employed him so that reflects on his judgement too.

When we were thrashed at Bournemouth they repeatedly bamboozled our defence with their corners. Eddie Howe is a manager who has probably brought a degree of scientific thinking to his job too.

At one point in the season we seemed to have done a lot of work on (attacking) corners. There seemed to a plan and there was lots of movement. However we didn't score and corners have looked more hopeful than planned in recent weeks. I don't know if that is the responsibility of Butler, but you would think that Fergie must have a massive input.

You might guess that Fergie would set the policy and the coach would plan the execution. But for either of them not to bother to have any strategy would be extremely negligent.

Anyone noticed that because the Dingles lost at home our six fingered friend sanpski has been absent this week?

Coming back to the actual match the Bury manager's comments on: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36007573 are unusually complimentary towards us - and we all know that opposing managers are generally not disposed to give credit.

I see too that the Board have affirmed their faith in DF.
