Summer Activity

If you look at the top three teams, you will see they have not changed their team a lot," said Wenger, as quoted in the Guardian on Saturday. “We have to strengthen our squad but it’s not obvious to find the players despite the money the English clubs will have. We are already working but we have to find the players and that is not easy.

“You cannot dismiss that the players are young: Alex Iwobi is 19, Mohamed Elneny is 23, Francis Coquelin 24, and they will be stronger next year but you need to keep a core of players and strengthen where we can. The team is going the right way."

--------------------------------------------------------

Now take what you want from the above quotes, but two things really irk me about statements such as the above. The tone of such words already smell of a man who is apologetic of his potentially inability to elevate the team this summer, before the summer has already began.

"You need to keep a core of of players and strengthen where we can".
Is Wenger suggesting that we 'could' only strengthen in the GK dept last summer then, whilst every other team invested in further outfield options. What good did that do us in further enabling our squad to reach its top goals this season (competing for the Prem and Improving in the CL).
We brought in Elneny in Jan who isn't regarded as top class but just filled in a gap at the time we needed him too. Could this not have been achieved in the previous window?

Finally, the man is very selective in when he chooses to look at other teams and use them as a barometer for how well we are doing our job. What does it matter what the teams around us do, when we have our own squad balance (or lack of) and deficiencies. Really struggling to see any sense of proactivity with these comments, or reason to believe this summer will be much different to the past few windows.

Assuming we don't win the league, what possible reason could fans use as justification for keeping Wenger?

For me, it's not just the fact that we won't win the league, after all only one team can win it, but it's the fact that we have not even in the slightest challenged Leicester! They have been so comfortable at the top since they took that position from us at the start of the year.

Considering we were the last team to beat them not too long ago, how did that result at emirates go on to galvanise their squad yet end up with our form in ruins. You have to ultimately look at the managers, as that should have been the stepping stone for us to give them a good chase!
It's embarrassing how Wenger continues to use the phrase mental strength, as Leicester & Ranieri have shown this season that it's the biggest thing our manager and team lacks right now.

To me the squad just doesn't look to have the motivation or desire to win the league. So many times we go into games and just don't look to put in the effort to win. Against 60% of teams in the league, we just always look complacent. We don't always go out properly try and win it seems, it's like we just wait to win without actually trying.

Then we have the issue of constantly bottling games. How many top teams do you see regularly loose 2-0/3-0 leads as often as we do. It's like on the most recently Tuesday club podcast, Alan was saying we get 3-0 up, the other team score and the whole squad in unison goes 'and 1 2 3, šhīt yourselves!!' Then we just concede 3 goals in 10 mins. These results are not one off. You just don't see good teams react like that. Usually a team get 2-0 up and it's game over. Even if they concede it's not panic stations! Insane how we drop points in same way every season! Ands it's the same pattern with which ever set of players is in the team

Whenever we go 2 up we never kills of the games

We sit back and defend and as soon as the oppo score we tend to collapse

Man City transfers in 2015/16:

De Bruyne £50m
Sterling £47m
Otamendi £33m
Delphi £8m

City are currently 1pt above us, albeit having played one game more, are in a Champions League semi-final (something Arsenal haven't achieved since 2009), and have already won silverware this season.

A season in which there manager has known he will be replaced in the summer.

Oh Arsene...
