My first taste of VR

Anyone who follows this board will be aware of PSVR and the fact I'm looking to buy one as soon as possible, unfortunately the release date isn't until October and with preorders sold out it will probably be nearer Christmas before I get my hands on one.

Thats a long time to wait so i have been looking into simple phone VR and bought myself the Gear VR, which uses a Samsung phone for the display, I have to say it's pretty impressive, If you own a modern Samsung S6 etc, then I would recommend you giving the Gear VR a try.

Only been playing with it for an hour or so, but it really does add a new dimension, it's not perfect but does offer a glimpse of the future, standing on an old shipwreck with the fishes swimming by is not something I ever imagined doing, but in the virtual world anything is now possible.

Nick you can potentially do the same thing with a google cardboard and any phone. The gear vr is just the pinnacle of the mobile version.

I chose the gear VR exactly for that reason Simon, I looked at the cheaper solutions, but from what I could gather as far as phone VR goes, Gear VR is another level.

It is really easy to set up and use, has extra sensors to aid VR and has teamed up with oculus to offer a very professional service, for what it offers it is best in it's class.

just scared the life out of the Mr's, stuck her in a short demo called Sister's.

She doesn't mind horror, but it freaked her out, it was funny though.

she said that VR makes everything so much more real.

All is true what you say Amiga unless you dont have a Samsung phone, the only reason I was point at cardboard.

Dunno if its the same where you are but here they are giving away Gear VR with s7 purchases

I know what you are saying Simon, I don't actually own a Samsung, but my mrs does' and I have nicked that to mess around with.

Gear VR isn't worth buying another phone for, but if you are looking to upgrade, Gear VR is worth considering.

There are a few free titles that are pretty fun and VR definitely adds to the enjoyment, Who knew smashing glass with ball bearings as you travel through VR could be so satisfying.

One of the things very noticeable with Gear VR is the screen door effect, It's good to hear that the PSVR seems to have pretty much solved that problem, which should only enhance the experience, along with head tracking and motion controls.

I showed the Gear VR to a work colleague last night, her first comment was, "what is it?"

Second comment "WOW"

Third comment "I want one"

Then I showed her the Sisters demo, and loads of screaming ensued, which included ripping off the headset twice in panic

I wish I'd recorded it, it would have made a brilliant you tube video.

Oh something worth mentioning, I suffer motion sickness quite badly and was a concern of mine using VR, I must say the gear VR has proved pretty good from that perspective, the only time I stopped was when I was on a virtual tour of the planets (I managed to get to Jupiter ) wasn't feeling too bad but could feel myself feeling a little uncomfortable so stopped before it got worse.

Other than that it's been a good experience.

Maybe spoke a little too soon, O bought a cheap control pad, so I could try a few games that didn't work without one.

The first game worked without one but the pad made progression easier, smashing glass travelling through the world was fine, got to level seven and the world starts spinning, talk about disorientation, I didn't survive very long, so didnt last long enough to feel sick.

Second I played a space ship game, the simple controller didn't work very well, but managed to finish the mission, mildly affected me but nothing that would stop me playing.

Third was Dreadhalls, a doom like game having you travel down narrow corridors and big rooms, not a good game for me, wasn't enjoying playing it as any movement felt weird, lasted about 5 mins and called it a night.

I'm hoping the PSVR higher frame and refresh rate will make a big difference, time will tell.

But yeah Gear VR can definitely affect you

Just for those that don't follow whats happening in VR, Google have announced something they are calling DayDream.

It is essentially VR built into the next Android code, with a hardware spec open to any manufacturer to take advantage of, apparently most the big players are on board (not Sony) with devices available as soon as this autumn.

VR is getting interesting.
