Blade Runner works so well because so much of it is real and tangible, it makes such a huge difference. Scott also had a great eye for quality and detail, he also had a rule of basically filling the place with smoke, low lighting and high contrast to hide everything, it's a technique that still looks great today. I'd also say there's loads of CGI in LOTR that have already dated, the bits where Legolas is jumping around the place onto big monsters defying gravity looked dodgy even back then IMO.
The doc Side by Side is a really interesting view into the development of digital filming in movies and how George Lucas although ridiculed for the effects and style of Star Wars 1-3, they also paved the way for digital filming to evolve into what we have now which is so much more advanced. But the contrast in the lighting in those 3 films is so bad, because it lacks contrast it has no depth, there are no blacks, just greys and everything looks like an ITV daytime low budget drama.

...........
I was thinking more about the Gollum scenes than anything else. But that goes back to how well done it is.
The Legolas scenes were too over the top even then, as you say.

Just trying to think of movies where the cgi stands up over time. Imo Jurassic Park is timeless. The worst is that scene in Independence Day where the dog jumps through the fire in the tunnel. Cringe

Jurassic Park stands up really, really well.Considering it was the first full one use of cgi, after that Young Sherlock Homes film.
Another film that stands up greatly with the use of cgi is the ott, political parody space war Starship Troopers.

Bang on about the first Jurassic park, still look good compared with modern CGI dinosaurs.

Anyone criticising Spiderman's dialogue hasn't a Scooby Doo about Marvel.
This really is the perfect Spiderman. He became who he is as a teen in highschool living with his aunt. He's not meant to be a hero in his late 20s.
