Been said before I know but I feel strongly that the current format is unfair to the team that finishes 3rd.
This season for example. Why should Brighton have to compete in a 2 leg semi-final play off against a team who they finished a massive 15 points ahead of in the final league standings??
If the points differential is, say,10 pts or more the 3rd place teams should go straight to the Wembley final. Leave the 4th & 5th placed teams scrap it out in a semi-final in these circumstances.
Sheffield Wednesday have got lucky tonight; the format doesn't reward overall league performance.
Brighton must be gutted. A real kick in the teeth for after all their hard work over the whole season.

Just seems to me the large disparity in points totals should be addressed, with no reward for league performance.
Perhaps for a 10 pts+ differential, the 3rd placed team goes into the tie with a 1 goal advantage....

The play offs have been around for many years. It's not like everyone is oblivious of the fact at the beginning of the season. Up The Owls

I love the play offs and see no reason to change them.
Brighton could have finished 2nd but didn't.
Brighton could have won the play-offs but didn't.
They knew the score at the start of the season as does everyone else.
If Brighton can't win big games under pressure then how are they going to cope in a PL relegation battle?

That's not true though is it?
Their reward was playing the 6th best team, instead of the 4th or 5th best.
Their own fault that they couldn't beat them.
