Robert Huth

Am I the only person that would snap up Robert Huth this summer in a heartbeat?

I've said before that Spurs are desperately lacking in leadership and maturity, and whilst not the most fancied of defenders or even the most talented, can you really argue with his commitment, calming nature, maturity and leadership?

He's won the PL now on 3 occasions, and I can't think of any other realistic centre back signings that would add genuine authority, steel and nerve the team.

Many people may say, 'don't break up our defence' 'we had a great defensive record' but the truth is when the pressure piped up that defensive organisation, maturity and leadership was nowhere to be seen.

I think Alderweireld and Vertonghen are both not the strongest in the air which Huth would sort out, and I also am just generally not very sure about Vertonghen. I still see a softness in him that doesn't sit well with me.

What do you think?

Not really our type of player is he

I must admit I was very impressed with Wimmer when he came into the team & thought he and Toby looked solid. I do think Verthongen is an excllent player, however I think Wimmer is a better defender.

My thinking would be to utilise Verts in a DM role alongside Dier at times. I know a lot of you don't think this would work, however we never saw Eric at DM either, did we?

Eric is 22 - so at relatively early stage of career for position change. Also didn't he occasionally play cm for sporting? Agree that we didn't see him playing at cm. I certainly didn't see him there and was cross with levy that we didn't sign a specialised cdm when we clearly needed one. Shows you what I know!

Jan is 29 - Jan reportedly used to get upset being used as a LB as he see himself as cb. I am not convinced he is mobile enough to play cm.

I think that Kevin and Toby will be our strongest CB pairing in due course. But Jan is a class act.

I'd also take Huth but am sure he's not going anywhere

Stay with what we have in the CB department. Concentrate on what we are short of and expect that, at some point, we will get the occasional stomping Newcastle handed out. Its the Spurs way.

Why would he want to come to the third best team in the prem.!!
We waited for you, but at the end of the season you just werent there!!

No chance. We play a completely different style of football. Whilst hoofing the ball upfield and fouling people constantly might be the order of the day over there, we like our defenders to be comfortable on the ball and actually defend without the need for persistent shirt-pulling, bear hugs and elbows.

Like you did against Chelsea !!

"It would be an absolute certainty that if he turned up at WHL, he would overnight turn into an absolute donkey."

--------

He /is/ an absolute donkey. But we don't require him to play football. You like your possession football, and you want your centre backs to be able to play. We've played all season in such a way that Huth only needs to do what he feels comfortable doing on the ball, which is very little. If threatened, hoof it and we'll deal with that. Our other defenders can play a bit - Morgan's no John Stones but he's not as bad on the ball as people think. But even he's under no obligation to recycle possession efficiently - we've played some good, exciting football in the opposition half (believe me or not; I suspect you won't but we don't do tippy-tappy around the back in order to get there. Morgan and Huth are primarily there to clear, block, throw themselves at crosses, get in the way and, on occasion, let attackers "know that they're there". (See Troy Deeney's column for the BBC a couple of months back.) And they've both been bl**dy effective at it for the last 6 or 7 months.

All in all, has he been a good player for us? You bet. Would he be a good player for you? Assuming you want to keep playing the same style you do, hell no. That's precisely why Mark Hughes let him leave Stoke a year ago. Would he want to go anyway? Can't see it.

Think our CBs our fine. Huth is a great player but defending with Leicester's style of play is a lot easier. He's no better than any of our CB or potential CB (Deir)

The way we play (and im not saying its the way I LIKE to play, but how Poch DOES play, we need our CBs to be relatively quick and agile, comfortable with ball at feet, and able to essentially become the fullbacks in phases of play.

Huth is none of the above

If you want a prime example of the outcome if we tried it, look no further than Fazio. He would probably do ok in Leicester's back four. Wheareas Toby would probably play as a RB for them.

Too slow, too old, is a thug and uses illegal tactics to gain an advantage (which he would not get away with playing for Spurs)
