What I mean by that is has a player’s loyalty to the club he played for potentially cost him, success or even playing at a better level he could have more than coped with?
I think for me one player completely sums up this question in my eyes.
Steve Bull. I think he once nearly joined Coventry. But imo he could have easily have made it in the old 1st Division.
I don’t even think Le Tissier gets close to that. I genuinely think Southampton were in hindsight the perfect club for him.
Some say Stuart Pearce with Forest.
Shearer too loyal to ABU? I have always been thankful he turned United down (i believe) on 3 occasions? He would've only made an excellent team even better.
Loyal players you feel have been too loyal?

Marco Reus?

Not sure I understand this one. Yes, they had one year out of the Champion's League, but you can bet that next season Dortmund will be one of the teams to beat on the European stage.
Unless you mean that he hasn't moved to Munich yet, in which case, I guess so.

Am i right in thinking there's no 'get out fee' in De Gea's contract?
...............
No one on here knows what is in his contract as far as I am aware. It is all speculation.

Most players have a buy out clause these days, that's usually beneficial to both club and player.

Walcott? Ruined his career with a manager taking 10 years and still not knowing what his position is or where to play him.

At Rangers it was the late Davie Cooper by a country mile.
World-class yet was content to simply play for the team he loved. Could easily have made it in any league yet wanted to stay close to his home town.
He was content with the choices he made, but in answer to the OP his loyalty probably cost him on a personal level financially and also from the wider audience his skills deserved.

Recent, the two I can think of the top of my head is:
Larsson (CELTIC) wasted his best years in the SPL
Totti (ROMA) won every player award going and the World Cup pity he found trophies hard to come by at club level.

Probably our very own L.King. Obviously injuries played their part, but their were whispers of a few big clubs hovering round pre-injury blight.

Was only youngish at the time but there was many a window when Anderton was linked with United. Was that just talk, loyalty, or injuries that prevented that from happening/never going to happen?

Controversial because of how much he won at United but Paul Scholes. Could have easily played in that Barcelona side who are considered by most to be the best club side ever.
