Drinkwater and Townsend not on standby

England boss Roy Hodgson would rather have named a 23-man squad from the outset, BBC Sport understands.

He went for 26 because of injury concerns.

Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere all took a full part in training this morning. They are considered fully fit.

Danny Drinkwater and Andros Townsend were called separately to Hodgson’s room to speak with him in private. They were both told of the news and took it in a respectful, professional way. They wished Hodgson and the team well.

They said goodbye to everyone before leaving the camp and will not be on standby.

Drinkwater missed out to Marcus Rashford, with Wayne Rooney also able to play in midfield. Townsend was in the squad as cover.

Its just the usual

Unbalanced squad. 3 CB's is it. One defensive midfield player and yes you leave out a fine CM player who has basically led the Champions in the middle of the park to take players like Wilshere

How many full backs?

England will do the usual. Some decent players but you can't possibly expect them to do anything significant

Henderson over Drinkwater is a horrendous decision.

Can't stand Hodgson. Hopefully he'll be gone after the euros.

Wishful thinking, he'll fail and his punishment will be a new contract!

Pride I wasn't having a dig at Utd u donut. But if drink water played for Utd or Liverpool he would be in the team. Just the way it is.

Why I mentioned drink and not Townsend is because drinkwater has been fantastic all season. He's genuinely what we miss and the best long range passer England have bar maybe carrick. Don't understand it, Henderson over him? Wilshere is a great player but so unreliable, don't be surprised he gets injured in the first game. And dier isn't all he's cracked up to be yet either

Beyond his recent injuries, Henderson is a much better player than Drinkwater.
Not sure what all the fuss is about.

Well said!! Coming from a Liverpool fan I appreciate your objectivity and for not showing club bias I applaud you.

The thing is I dont think Henderson is a Terrible player but hes a average one in a similar ilk or milner, add dier in the mix and its nothing to write home about. Just "workers". Drinkwater works hard, wins the ball but can do something with it. I would have either taken vardy and drinkwater or neither. As now vardy doesnt have a player who can play them balls over the top on the counter
