Rant about England

Not sure what annoys me more as an England fan, the nonsense spouted by the fans and the pundits or Hodgson caving in to their demands

I thought with his squad selection Hodgson was finally going to do the right thing and play the technical players, against the will of the fans who clamour instead for the workhorses like Drinkwater

Instead, we got that team selection vs Portugal. Three physical midfielders, and three forwards. No link players whatsoever, and by the end of the half it was just Rooney hoofing balls towards Vardy and Kane after about a decade for the back players to get it forward

The game obviously changed when the technical players like Wilshere, Sterling to some extent, and Lallana came on. Then we started playing quickly and with better movement and understanding

I think Hodgson saw that and hopefully he addresses it. Because despite the fans' love for players like Milner who run a lot, they always look out of their depth at international level

I still don't understand why someone like Carrick wasn't picked, who can get the ball moving forward quickly from the DM position. England is the only 'top' nation that prefers a DM who can block and tackle, rather than get the ball moving quickly in the first phase, and then wonder why there's loads of backwards and sideways passing

Despite taking 5 strikers, which was a bit stupid, we need to just play one which obviously won't happen as Rooney will play as captain. I honestly think a leg break would benefit England, not necessarily because Rooney is bad, cos he's still a decent player who scores goals for England, but purely for balance purposes

We should be going 4231 but haven't trained with it so the next best alternative is 433, and despite everybody's groans, some 'form' players will have to be dropped

Hart
Walker Stones Smalling Rose
Alli Dier Wilshere
Lallana Kane Sterling

This won't happen though, and the best we can hope for is at least Wilshere for Milner and Sterling for Vardy. But then playing Kane as a wide forward is pointless, Sturridge would be better suited to that (but fans will moan because Kane had a better season in the league)

The crux of it is that I wish England just played their technical players that combine well, rather than trying to shoehorn the captain and the flavour of the seasons, in the hope that everything works out

Seeing the same mentality that saw people wanting Rickie Lambert to go to the last World Cup.
It is similar with club fans wanting their team to sign the player who had a good season in the PL (the likes of Lambert, Fellaini etc) and not understanding why they flop when they do move.

The problem with a lot of England player`s is that they come off the bench for a 20 minute game, look OK at the very least, and then when they get picked to play the full 90 minutes, usually look absolute rubbish.

The truth is England have a lot of 20 or 30 minute players in the squad, very few of them can manage a good 90 minutes on a consistent basis.

Isn't he just. Or yourself?
People who dont think drinkwaters a great passer are deluding themselves.
I like wilshere and as an all around player he may have more talent, but you cant knock drinkwater this year. Some of the passes he's made which mahrez and vardy DID NOT finish were spectacular, let alone the ones they did score from

International football is very different from club footy, my naive lad. That's why a team like Chile, or Croatia with few players at big European clubs can run rings round a team with "superstars" like England. The pace is slower, players have less time together to bond and those who suceed tend to be the more tactically astute and technically proficient.

I watched tons of Leicester matches last season. Enough to know your Drinkwater comments are hyperbolic nonsense. He's a fairly solid all-round player (like Milner, but less talented), but he wouldn't look above his class playing for Palace. Leicester winning the league doesn't make all their players amazing.

I have to agree. Only the most technically axcomplished sides ever do well internationally.

Greece would never have won the Euros - beating the hosts Portugal twice, France, Czechs and drawing with Spain - if they had a team built from journeymen and built on good old fashioned hard work and industry

Good article. Again.

England habitually can't retain possession and circulate the ball well from deeper areas. Wilshere or Rooney are the best options within the squad to do this. I don't like either player but it's quite clear to me that they have superior technique, composure and vision than the rest of the midfielders. Drinkwater is bang average, a limited player who plays in a limited system.

As for the strikers, Woy needs to grow a pair and admit that Kane and Vardy together suits neither player. Kane starts, Vardy on the bench. All this shoehorn business is reminiscent of Sven at Euro 2004. Quite embarrassing that experienced managers haven't got the backbone to pick players to suit a system rather than picking 'names' to win some popularity contest.

For all the talk of technique, the goal came from a winger actually being a winger and crossing the ball, and a header from the most uncultured centre back in the squad

And the most tactically astute sides, as previously mentioned. Also, I have no problem if you say Drinkwater is important for his "industry" (though with the likes of Dier, Milner, Henderson and Alli, England aren't lacking for "industry" ). Just don't give me the clearly factually incorrect crap about him being some great passer that England will miss. That was the comment I found laughable. If you wanted someone to orchestrate things from deep, you could have taken Carrick. Drinkwater, with his mid-70's pass completion percentage is hardly what will make England tick.

If you want to play an attacking formation with 3 advanced attacking players and flying fullbacks, you need a player whose passing will be reliable and won't expose the team when it commits a lot of players forward. Drinkwater is not that player.

Rooney is the problem here. He is not a midfielder, his passing is predictable and often inaccurate. His scoring is drying up and his energy levels are lower than the likes of Alli.

Last night was an absolute joke from Roy. WTF is he doing playing such a useless formation and line up 1 game out from the tournament.

What speaks volumes for me is that I am not sure what line up or formation we will play, when really it should be bloody obvious seeing as we have built up to this for 2 years.

Roy has fecked up these preparations massively. We are more confused than we have ever been. He talks about sticking with players that got us there (ie Rooney , Henderson, Milner) when really the likes of Townsend and D'water deserve it much more. As for Rashford, what a waste of a squad place that is.....5 strikers when really we should only play with 1 and 2 or 3 back up.
Clueless from Roy. An unbalanced squad and team with off-form and bog average players filling a quarter of the squad.

Cristian's Ronaldo has scored 117 goals since Jack Wilshere last played a full 90mins for Arsenal. Yet some believe he is the messiah 😂😂😂
