Admin, any chance of a multiboard on the football pages too?
What is your favourite quote (hint the bbc sport page have an article with loads of his quotes across boxing, his general character and his political views).
Personally, my fave is, upon being forced to fight in Vietnam or go to jail and release his world heavyweight title while undefeated:
"Man, I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong. No Vietcong ever called me n-word."
Also:
"I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale; handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder in jail; only last week, I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalised a brick; I'm so mean I make medicine sick."
I personally love when a person is good at what they do, and can back it up. He was confident, cocky even, but he was always humble inside and often spoke out about other fighters as part of the promotion. We can see that with his political views how he wanted to fight for his people and be an inspiration.
The thing that defines him, to me anyway, is not just that he was such a great boxer, but that he had the character to match. In a time where his own people were suppressed he was not afraid to speak out. Compare that to all of todays celebrities who can't count to 5
"Will they ever have another fighter who writes poems, predicts rounds, beats everybody, makes people laugh, makes people cry and is as tall and extra pretty as me?"
The answer has been a clear no.

There are many great Ali quotes, many funny ones, many that capture the essence of the man, but the ones related to the civil rights struggle and Viet Nam are of a special significance. Home-hitting truths that still ring true today.

As an aside, I only found out just now that the famous Adidas "Impossible Is Nothing" slogan is actually an Ali quote.
In full:
“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

"Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth"
Sums him up in one.

Greatest quote? There's too many to identify a single one, one that did really get me...
On the Arsenio Hall show in 89'.
Ali and Tyson both on the sofa. Ali is asked 'you think this man hits harder than Earnie Shavers?'
'Do I think...? Are you coloured?'
Brilliant.
