I don't think the PS4 can support external hard drives, well to install and play games anyway. It can only be used as media storage. I believe you can upgrade the internal hard drive though since its removable.

It is as Bumble says, PS4 doesn't support external drives for games.

I will be doing this over the weekend and research generally gives you 2 options:

If you want quicker load times the best one is the 1tb Travelstar 7K1000 - this is a quicker drive than that in a vanilla PS4 so results have shown upto 10-15mins quicker install times and upto 30 seconds quicker load times on games such as GTAV.

If space is your bigger concern then the 2tb Samsung M9T is reportedly your best option giving you 4 times the space of your original PS4.

It is very simple to change - check out youtube videos, you just pop off the top cover of the console, and you sometimes need to put somethings on a pen drive.

Seems both can be purchased for appx £70.

Also forgot to say dont even bother with SSDs the PS4 is designed to use em properly.

I use an external hdd for my Xbox one, which does support games etc, actually works a lot faster than the internal (which isn't removable) since its usb 3.0. 500gb just isn't enough for games these days.

Did you try this Hitler?

Im 50% through the process, and it took me a while as i didnt have a clean drive available to back my game stuff onto. Once that was done so far the backing up took an hour (200gb of data) but any disk games i deleted to save time.

By the way the stuff you need to switch out a drive:
The new hard disk
An external hard disk to back stuff up (only necessary if you dont want to redownload)
USB drive with the PS4 OS on

Anyways hope to have this finished later on this afternoon

Success!

With the back/restore taking the longest (1 hour each) Maybe 20 mins of changing the disk out and re installing the os was a pretty painless exercise.

Back up and restore is certainly the best way to go even to just save the user details and stuff. Everything was fine even to themes.

If you are happy to re download everything its basically a 20 minute job

Good luck!
