Lionel Messi has retired from international duty, following Argentina's penalty shoot out loss to Chile in the Copa America final.
During a post-match interview an emotional Messi told Argentine television: "The national team is over for me. It's not for me. After four finals the decision is taken, I believe.
"I've done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion."
A sad day for many football lovers perhaps, but having been on the losing side in four international finals, at least the 29 year old Barcelona star will now have more time on his hands to help his father keep an eye on his financial affairs.

Argentina have to be the biggest chokers of all time.

That's weak and pathetic. Argentine fans used to derisively call him "the Catalan" when he was younger and they struggled to take to him. This won't help matters.

a bit harsh to call a decision that hurts him personally as weak and rubbish! Whats your basis? maybe he feels failure to win a competition they have dominated is good enough reason for him to resign, same way a CEO would resign if the company performs poorly or a politician would resign if he fails to deliver on his promises.
I don't see how self introspection and admitting failure can be seen as weak and pathetic. He knows and accepts that people have certain expectations and he has failed to meet them. 2 crucial finals as captain and he has failed to lead his team to the title.
Should have won both finals in my opinion but thats besides the point.
I think International football as a whole is in a mess

I don't think he'll care a great deal anymore. Barcelona is his home and they will worship him long after he leaves this mortal curl
