Loris karius

Really think this lad will be our signing of the summer. Seems like a solid, safe keeper who we can rely on week in week out.

Bundesliga expert jorg Jakob, who writes for kicker said this about him:

"I think Karius’ experience that he had as a youngster at City will prove valuable and this along with language was part of the decision because they know he can cope.

“I think it’s also important that he’s not just aware of the set pieces coming in from left and right but in England a lot of balls are played very hard at a very high tempo vertically into the danger zone.

“This is a guy who they trust in those situations while he is also able to open the game which is something that Roman Weidenfeller lacked a bit at Dortmund but Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are very good at when the goalkeeper is already involved."

Jakob then mentioned a poll that was conducted by kicker where they asked all the players in bundesliga of who they rated as the best players in the league in each position

He said: “We did a poll at Kicker when we ask all the Bundesliga players on their opinions on the season and they voted Karius as the second best goalkeeper behind Manuel Neuer which was a very interesting result.

“There are some very good goalkeepers in the Bundesliga so among the 235 professionals who answered, to put Karius only behind Neuer really is quite a statement.

And for any wondering if he will have the temperament to fight for the number one jersey with mignolet, Jakob had this to say.

“What I think is really interesting is when Karius started at Mainz there wasn’t just a battle for first and second place, they had three goalkeepers and we wondered who would be number one.

“There was Heinz Muller, Christian Wetklo and Karius. That season when Karius became number one he had started the season as number three. For me this epitomises his character."

Very excited to have karius on board, looking forward to him being our number one for years to come.

That said hes clearly a likeable figure around the place, which is why hes probably still winging it as first team gk coach. Players always seem to be having a laugh with him and hes mentioned on that Team Mates soccer am thing a lot for being the longest in the shower?

Yeah achterberg has had many questions over him for a while, I do find his promotion and reinas decline at the same time to be interesting. Although it coincided with reinas move away falling through so it could have just been that.

I do find it baffling how he hasn't been able to improve a single thing with mignolet. I mean nothing. What do they do in training all the time? No player is so uncoachable that they can't Improve in one single area.

But back to karius I really think he's going to be excellent for us, and at 4.7 million pounds it's a magnificent price.

We've had long drawn discussions on here about Achterberg. I think he should be replaced.

Not sure you can blame Reina's form on Acterberg. I'd say it was down to his stinking attitude. And he didn't exactly pull up any trees after he left us (not that I remember) so maybe he was just on the decline.

I don't know anything about Acterberg to know whether he's a good coach or not, but most of Mig's issues lie in his bloopers, letting in soft goals. You can coach someone 15 hours a day, but can you prevent the simple mistakes Mig makes? Most of Migs issues are maybe in his head, so perhaps we should be looking at the club psychologist

I agree with reina.

But with migs, it's not just his howlers. Absolutely no improvement with how he handles crosses and his woeful distribution which has actually gotten worse since he joined us are just two areas that most definitely could have and should have been improved by his coach.

Yeah Reina was really bad in his last 2 seasons. The amount of nearpost goals were terrible and flapping in the air at nothing...

Anyway Mig reminds me of Skrtel, he has a fair few soild games and you think its all clicked, but then all his progression resets again and back to stage one!

The last sentence pretty much sums us up since the title challenge season...

I agree that some of Mig's faults should have improved through training. Mig's shot stopping prowess is more a natural skill rather than something he acquired through training, but obviously training should help him improve that still.
In any case, the stats might suggest he isn't that good a shot stopper but theoretically it can be argued that he flourishes in situations that require instinctive or reflex reactions but is abysmal in situations where skills acquired through training are required eg set pieces and crosses.
