You don't have to fill the 25 man squad, so your initial statement that "you need a minimum of 8 in your squad"
is incorrect.
Not sure what maths has anything to do with anything.

I was talking about if you had a full named squad of 25 and not like 22.

They probably have to go... None are liable to play for the first team so its pointless having them taking up a squad place... And pointless for them to hang around with no chance of progressing past the under 21 side

No you weren't. You was taking exception to the idea 5 homegrown players would leave because, and I quote, "you need a minimum of 8 in your squad"

It seems the real question when discussing this point is who are the 17 non homegrown players a club will register. A bit misleading calling it the homegrown rule when you don't actually need any homegrown players.

We've kept players who haven't been registered with the seniors to 22 and 23 years old previously. There's no real harm in it if there are gaps in the U21 squad, players go out on loan, and/or they still have potential to break through.

Keane might stick around or go out on loan. There's an argument that says he might still be playing catch up after that horrible injury. It can take a long time to get past something like that mentally and physically.
