DUFC News

I didn't make it to the game in Inverness on Saturday but it was a very pleasing 2 points that has helped put us into a really strong position going into our final fixture at home to Dunfermline on Sunday.

It feels slightly odd though that we could potentially finish ahead of ICT after winning 2 and drawing 2 when they'll likely have won 3 and drew 1. Such is life though and we all knew the rules before the competition started. Obviously we have been beneficiaries of the new set up after winning both our shootouts (without missing a penalty) so I'm not likely to complain. Regardless, I've really enjoyed the new set up and I'm hopeful we'll qualify for the next round now even if it is as one of the best runners up. Ten points should be enough.

As I say, I wasn't at the game, but one of my mates was and he was impressed with VDV. I think he'll be a big signing. Cammy Smith and Toshney were both apparently good and it really is a big plus to see our new signings impressing early doors. It's a welcome change to dud after dud being signed. I'm starting to feel very positive about the new season.

I did listen to the radio on Saturday and it was interesting to hear McKinnon's comments on his central defence partnerships, and he was clear that he's still uncertain which is his best pairing. It is a little concerning and I think it has to get resolved early doors. I suspect the problem is that we have Harry Souttar going into his debut season and three defenders who aren't that impressive. We all know Dillon is capable of playing either very well or absolutely dreadfully, with no inbetween. Durnan is a dumpling but might be right for this level. I'm not a fan of Donaldson's attitude. I don't think we can bring someone else in so we'll just need to see how it goes.

He was also saying he's looking to bring another striker in, which is a good thing. There's been lots of speculation that Anier will move on and I'd be reluctant to see him go without bodies being brought in first.

Ultimately though I'm looking forward to Saturday and then beyond that to the league campaign starting.

Mon the Terrors.

I also see this morning that we've signed highly rated 17 year old Fifer Louis Appere, who was recently on trial at those cheating Italian bassas Roma.

I think this means we can report that we've beaten those cheating Italian bassas Roma to his signings.

A win for the good guys.

I agree about the new format and competition and I have enjoyed it as an early start to the season.

The only change I would make for next year (although hopefully we aren't in it) is one quite a few have suggested and allow 5 subs.

SPR

I saw something on twitter about that - apparently extra subs was discussed at SPFL level but they aren't allowed to due to FIFA rules. Any competitive competition can only have three substitutes as per the rulebook.

I think it would have been helpful to have more than 3 to be honest.

Read the article on the Falkirk game where ref awarded penalties for the usual shirt grabbing that seems to be allowable in everyday football. Also that the FA will be clamping down on it.

Good. Hope they really fire into this. Does my box in.

I watched the game and to be fair he was technically right to give them, even though you see it a hundred times in every game.

It'll be very interesting to see if this standard is maintained.

The other thing they are supposed to be clamping down on is player dissent, hassling the ref and begging for opponents to get sent off

Remember that season they claimed there was a "new directive" on cynical tackles, yet Danny Swanson was the only player ever to see red for it?
Good times at the blatantly corrupt SFA.

Also hooray, Dundee United are currently not terrible. It's been a while. Also interesting that since we've been relegated, Celtic have lost to a Gibraltarian team, Aberdeen have lost to a Luxembourgian team and Hearts have lost to a Maltese team.

Proof if it were ever needed that the Premiership needs a strong United.

Hard to argue against this to be honest.

Also given that we've now sort of beaten a Premiership team away from home, I think that pretty much means we're going to win the Premiership next year. Which is nice.
