Tonight will see the very first Video Assistant Referee (VAR) experiment in a competitive match.
New York Redbulls II vs Orlando City B at Red Bull Arena in the United Soccer League will be the history makers as an additional referee will sit in a video booth with access to replays from all available cameras. He will then advise the head referee on "game-changing" decisions including goals, penalty decisions, straight red cards and cases of mistaken identity.
There will be another 4 live trails at Red Bull Arena before the end of the year. After that, as long as these live trials are successful we could see VARs featured in the FIFA Club World Cup in December.
Come the new year, competitions in Australia, Germany, Brazil, Hol;land, Portugal and again, USA will go live with experiments in VAR.
So, how does it work. 3 steps:
1. Ref asks for assistance.
2. VAR watches TV
3. Ref either ignores what the VAR says and goes and watches the replay himself. Or he accepts what they say and act accordingly.
No silly challenge flags
For those of you who are visual learners, here's how it will all work via the medium of a short black and white story board:

Here's some more info from IFAB on the future of VARs:

On a completely separate topic....how mad is it that the FAs of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have such a huge say in the rules of the game through IFAB?
I'd say quite mad
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would have agreed with you had you included England in your statement.
Alas you didn't, and now I'm left believing you're a parochial little Englander who still thinks we're living in Colonial times.
I also think you're a bit of a kock.

go on then....explain how having a vote to change the rules does not give you any more influence than not having a vote.
Should be good......

So you make up a lot of nonsense and don't understand how things work and I have to explain why?
Interesting concept
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah....so go on....
What nonsense?
Are there only 4 FAs in the world who are voting members of IFAB?
Are their votes needed to enable rule changes?
Does having a vote on rule changes not give you greater influence than not having a vote?
so go on........

The IFAB regularly convenes to debate, define, manage and make amendments to the Laws of the Game.
The IFAB is comprised of the four British football associations (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) with one vote each, and FIFA with four votes.
here, you might want to drop them a line to tell them they're spouting nonsense, I'm sure they'd appreciate it:

The video assistant should sent the replay to the refs watch, make it one of those iwatch things with a screen. Instant decision to be made from them with it being replayed.

Hawkeye has been brilliant for both tennis and cricket. Something similar is actually quite welcome.
