been watching the ghana brasil second half, lucas has had a good half doing the simple things well and recycling possesion. Really starting to look dominant in the 'Busquets role' , also notable that just like busquets does for barca he is dropping into a 3rd center back in possesion to let thiago and lucio drift wide and in turn enable the attacking full backs to push forward. Could this be a strategy we look to exploit when breaking down defensive teams
so in posession we would be a bit like
-----------------------reina----------------------
------carragher----lucas-----agger--------
------------------------------------------------------
johnson--------gerrard--adam--------enrique
--------------------------------------------------------
-------downing------------------suarez----------
-----------------------kuyt----------------------------
this would let suarez and downing(or bellamy, maxi etc) drift into the difficult to mark area between fullback and center back whilst still retaining width/ stretching the opposition. and could be useful for opponents such as fulham or sunderland who are organised and difficult to play against but not particularly quick on the break (against quicker teams maybe kelly could be drafted into carra's position)
apologies for speiling

no good speculating on theory. football is a pratical game. "this would allow so&so to do this" etc ... it just isn't as simple as that.

This formation with the dm dropping back to cb, is the same way Brazil have played for years. It used to be Gilberto Silva's role.

He did that for us last season at times. Can't remember when but I do remember thinking WTF he's covering at centrehalf.

I really cant see Carragher making raids forward ala Lucio can you?
However Lucas has been our best player for some time now. All praise is thoroughly deserved
