The transfer window has now closed and it can fairly be said that West Ham have emerged still intact.
Not only have we kept Carlton Cole and Rob Green, we have added quality players e.g. Demel, Lansbury, Bentley etc.
I said in May, after our relegation, that any assessment of our promotion chances could not reasonably be made until September, as the squad could have radically changed.
Well, I now feel that West Ham have a very good chance of promotion. We'll at least make the play-offs. Quite who our rivals are is a bit difficult to say at this stage. 10 games should give a clearer picture.

T K o T: Correct. Most people assumed Parker was captain when, in fact, it was mercenary Matthew Upson.

My mistake.......................................but could that also be one reason why you got relegated?

It proves how awful Upson was/is I know that, thought he was off to BIG CLUB ends up only Stoke wanted him.

West Ham were relegated because of Avram Grant.

No, WHU got relegated because you were not good enough to stay up. If it happened to Spurs, I would say exactly the same thing.
Grant took Chelsea to a CL Final, so are you saying he was not good enough?
I think the players need to step forward and admit they let the fans & the club down.

The sad thing is you are correct, the sadder thing is on paper the West Ham team should have been more than good enough to stay up. The fact of the matter is only Parker, Green & maybe Noble seemed to want to even try. That reflects badly on Grant and the players.

Same nonsense from geniusgreaves,
Grant sacked because he fail to win either CL or PL and his management was awful.

That West Ham squad had more than enough quality to stay up. But the manager was useless and couldn't inspire the players. The players had the quality but lacked motivation.
I remember before Harry took charge when Tottenham were towards the bottom. Had the manager (Ramos?) stayed, they may well have been relegated. The players had quality but couln't be motivated by the manager.
Had that Tottenham team been relegated, most people would say it was because of the manager, and not because the players were not good enough.

myhammers................I understand what you are saying, in my day however we always tried our best when on the pitch, irrespective of who the manager was or was not.
It is convenient to blame the manager, but ALL the players have to accept they let the club down. Where is their pride, their responsibility to the fans who pay their wages.
Part of the problem also was the attitude which came about from your previous owners who paid ludicrous wages to average players................................
As I have said previously I have always liked the way that WHU played football, and like you dislike the present owners, I just think that we as fans let players off too lightly when it comes to apportioning the blame.
Good result yesterday by the way!

Greaves: I think we're actually in total agreement here without knowing it!
My point was that that West Ham squad possessed the quality to stay up. At the very least, there were 3 other clubs whose players were not as good as ours. Avram Grant could not motivate the players to play to their potential. If anything, he was a demotivator.
So when I say we were good enough to stay up, I am referring to the physical qualities of those players.
That said, the attitude of most of those players was shocking. As much as the manager was useless, they should have been professional enough to have played well enough to have stayed up. It's a sad fact that players are paid far too much and have nothing to lose by not trying. It shouldn't have to be up to a manager to motivate players. When a striker is one-on-one with a keeper, he should do his best to score irrespective of whether his manager is Avram Grant or Alex Ferguson.
It makes my blood boil when players play to a fraction of their potential simply because they don't like the manager, but as soon as a new manager comes in, they're totally transformed. It clearly shows these highly paid individuals weren't really trying in the first place.
In my opinion, the worst thing a footballer can ever do is to not give 100% every game. There can be absolutely no excuse whatsoever for that.
