Richard Stearman

Now that Wolves has rectified Jenny's terrible mistake in selling our double player of the season, it got me thinking about the "sold for footballing reasons" excuse that he trotted out.
At the time, no one was sure who had decided to break up the best centre back partnership that we'd had for years. In fact, no one really understood how the transfer process worked at Wolves. Who decided what! With the departure of Morgan, Moxey and of course, Jenny, that leaves Thelwell still in his post at Molineux with Zenga and the new team.
It's fair to say that Zenga and Tutti would know very little about Stears but Thelwell would be able to brief them fully, so surely he would have been against the sale to Fulham and fully in favour of Stearman's return.
Morgan had lost interest in Wolves by the time that Stearman was sold, although he didn't officially put Wolves up for sale until after Stearman's departure.
That leaves Jenny and Moxey!
Jenny had consistently included Stearman alongside Batth as his preferred defensive partnership and (if I recall) played Stears in all of the pre-season games with different partners while Batth was injured. This would suggest that Jenny rated Stearman and would be loathe to sell him to a Championship rival.
Moxey, as we all know, can't resist the lure of money so when Fulham came knocking with a fistful of tenners, Moxey would have snatched their hands off.
So, for me, "sold for footballing reasons" is BS. Stearman was sold for financial reasons!

Anyway, it's all water under the bridge now and the wrong has been righted.
Welcome back, Richard. Hopefully you can rekindle the relationship you had with Danny Batth and help to power us to promotion.

I'm not sure what role Williamson will have this season. If he gets fit, will he be ahead of our 'new find'. I'd like to think the RS is here purely as a back-up CB, especially as Ebanks-Landell has gone out on loan.

Time will tell, I guess.

The answer to your question wolfie according to the ever reliable E & S:

The luckless 32-year-old has not kicked a ball for Wolves since signing for £200,000 in January.

It was hoped he would be in contention for a long-awaited comeback at the start of this season.

But after his tendon problem flared up again, Williamson was ruled out of training for a month.

And it is believed he’s now had an operation to remove a troublesome floating bone in his leg. A current timescale puts Williamson’s comeback on hold until January at the earliest.

With the former Newcastle man out of contract at the end of the season, there are serious doubts he will play for the club again.

The latest news is a huge blow to both player and club. Williamson starred during a five-game loan spell last November and was seen as the answer to Wolves’ defensive woes at the time.

Thanks Gem. Guess that answers my question about Williamson at least.

Stearman had an impressive "debut" yesterday. A nice welcome from the South Bank before the game, and he was quite commanding in defence. Several great runs forward which were just what the game needed. Also some excellent blocks.

The penalty was just one of some odd decisions by the referee, and was extremely harsh, to say the least. The save by Ikeme was poetic justice.

Good to see that Stearman received high scores in the player ratings, and I see some nominating him MOM on MolMinx.

"Welcomed back like a hero". 7/10 rating. Would sweat blood and tears for the Club.

Chatting to a number of guys in Wombourne Pool Bar last night who went to the game, and the consensus was that he played well, and also plays well alongside Batth,

I thought Stearman played well on Saturday and it would be a surprise if him and Batth were not our regular centre backs this season.

It would be a shame if we didn't see the benefit of the development of Hause and EEL in time though. Centre Backs don't tend to reach their peak until their late twenties and neither of these are that far away from being decent defenders. EEL will benefit from his loan and Hause strangely looks far more comfortable in an England shirt than he does for Wolves. He will doubtless get another chance when either of the first two are unavailable.

Walter also has to decide whether he sees Iorfa as a full back or centre back. Personally I could see him becoming a top full back and if we don't develop him that way then I suspect a decent Premier League club will.

As for Williamson, I doubt we will see him play for Wolves again. Maybe because of injury and partly because his ability became over rated during his loan spell in my opinion. Nobody on Tyneside seemed to mourn his departure, in fact they were very happy to see him go.
