What kind of absolute sicko starts a rumour like that?
He'd be a considerable catch. But he might want a considerable salary....

It is sad that anyone would invent something like that.
However, it is impressive that fatfox has contacted Malbranque's solicitor for the full story.

Just looked into it, and I was wrong. Makes me wonder how all these football players that have twitter have been saying stuff about him and his family etc. In that case, he would make a good acquisition

So does anyone know why he actually left St Etienne after making only 1 appearance?

As I expect you are fully aware, DM, his solicitors decided to put out a press statement rather than speak to me in person . However, I am tempted, while on the subject, to read something into the fact that the solicitors he selected to issue the statement are London-based. Considering he is a French (albeit Belgian-born) player leaving a French club, it suggests that he is particularly keen that it is understood in *England* that he has not retired.
St Et have described the split as "amicable", but that's more or less par for the course. More revealing, I think, is that the club also says "This choice is his alone and ASSE fully respects Steed's will." Even when there's a confidentiality agreement to prevent details being discussed, that's not the kind of phrase that clubs use when a player has been sacked. I think we can take it that he was very unhappy about something at the club.
Classy player. We are, it must be said, well-stocked with midfielders – but on the other hand, not ones that have played on both left and right wings at Premiership level as recently as last season.

Steed Malbranque sounds like a super villian name.
Probably best left alone.

As in "No, I expect you to die, Mr Bond…"?

Yeah...exactly that.
On the other hand...might add a bit of steel? (teeth)
