He's done an awful job with the U21s you naughty boy
There really are not many good contenders for the captaincy tbf. I'd stick with Rooney so long as he doesn't actually start, he's the natural leader of the group. The suggestions so far are pretty rubbish though; I mean Lallana, Dier and Hart are actually some of the best choices. From the players I'd have starting, probably Smalling is the obvious choice. How much of that is due to my inclination to have a centre back as captain, I don't know.

I wouldn't call unbeaten in 7 and getting to a final of the championships awful.

Dier would be a good captain in two years.

Why should there be a definite England captain anyway? It's such a nonsense because all it means is that player is guaranteed a start no matter how poor form they're in.
Just do what Italy do which is automatically give the captaincy to whoever is the most capped player in the side on any given match day. Works very well for them and avoids all the problems we constantly run into with this issue.

Works well with them because it's almost always Buffon.

But Gerrard wasn't officially captain. Not the same as stripping Rooney. Like I said, delusion.

If Rooney is the Alpha Male it just goes to show what a bunch of monkeys we have in the England team.

Has any manager ever switched their main captain over within a few games before?
