I'd expect Clarke to be given a game or two. Just in case he can make things work better for you. Shame the internationl break is in the way.
Other than that is has to be either Bruce (tried and tested) or Wagner - but he is a gamble.
I cant see anyone else in the frame.

What I cant understand is why you are in this position!
If Villa lined up with just 2 up front... then packed five into a midfield behind them... with two of them told to just sit in front of the back four (much as Pulis does with Fletcher and Yacob)... You'd be solid with a real goal threat.
Why didnt RDM ever see that? Or did he try it out and then abandon it??

He wanted to do this, but he was told he could only pick 11 players.

It has to be Bruce for me. We can't keep making gambles.
I would have loved Smith as a Villa man, but his time may come at a later date.
Bruce has always done well at this level, his biggest problem has always been when he tries to get a team to push on in the prem.
Get him in ASAP as I wouldn't want Clarke to be manager. Good coach but not a manager it seems.
Villa have all the gear for this division, hopefully Bruce has the idea how to get them to gel.

I'm really worried that we will go all out for Wagner, throw money at Huddersfield and him, and then it will be groundhog day when things don't click into place.
Paddy, you're a good poster so I'm not mocking you, but I said on an earlier thread there was no chance and our chairman has reiterated as much in the past 48 hours. Wagner is the best manager in this division, but only when he's given the freedom to do it his way. He wouldn't get the time he'd need at Villa and would probably be sacked before the season was out. He didn't improve results with us last season at all, but the wiser fans among us knew that something was happening, and with the right backing and time, he was going to achieve something good. I think 11 games in its safe to say we had a point.
The interesting bit of your post was "throw money". I've a good mate who is a massive Villa fan and I've had the discussion with him...money will only do so much in this league. We've assembled an entire team for a quarter of what you spent on strikers this summer and we're what, 15 points up on you already?
Blackburn tried it, Fulham tried it, but unless you have the unity and desire in your players, this league is hard, really hard! Money will only get you so far.
Good luck for the rest of the season though. I've seen Villa fans in quite a few games in my lifetime and they are always first class, some of the best around. You'll be back
