I retweeted last night a very good blog by Tam McManus where he talked about Loyalty in football, and how in reality it doesn't exist. I would strongly recommend reading it.

It echoes a lot of what I think about football and it's very interesting to hear him speak so openly about the fact that he was very much a mercenary.
I also think he's bang on that we as fans and clubs are hypocrites in expecting loyalty when we don't show loyalty to players ourselves - we are so quick to demand players are shipped out the door if they aren't delivering, regardless of their contracts, yet we bemoan a player for wanting to move on to bigger clubs and more money.
I think in some ways the Barton situation mirrors what Tam is writing about - and probably inspired the piece. Clubs will do anything to get a player off the books as he illustrated with his example while at Dundee. I'm sure every club has behaved in such a way. I'm sure Rangers are doing similar to encourage Barton to move on.
Anyway, a good read if you have a spare few minutes.
Loyalty - a myth

I've said it before but I think of myself as loyal.
Loyal to my company, loyal to my line manager.
However loyalty to my family comes first. If I can give them a vastly better financial footing then any loyalty to a line manager or company comes second.

Some players do bring it on themselves. The likes of Christian Dailly and Cesc Fabregas claiming they'd never join a different Scottish/English team... and then doing exactly that.
Willo Flood is also a backstabbing disloyal Judas rat-faced... oh wait, he signed for us again. Club legend.

Fans romanticise about the players in their team spilling a gut to get results and that they all want to stay at the club the whole career.
So when a player signs for a rival it is understandable they get a bit of stick. But some of the abuse is beyond ridiculous, hoping they get a career ending injury for example.
It's never interested me, I don't expect any good United player to play even half their career for us and if they leave for more money fair enough.
Just always play gash against us after you have done so.
