I am in no way scapegoating Lingard for yesterday's result.
I just wanted to put the question out there... do you think he is good enough to be in our starting 11. I'm not asking is he good enough to be in the 25 man squad but the starting 11.
I think he isn't. His passing is way off, he stands there in VERY tight spaces pointing a lot instead of actively moving into the channels (like Mata). He possesses a very good shot, and more often than not he will get it on target but as an overall package I just feel he is lacking. He is also nearly 24 so he isn't really a 'youngster' anymore if people use that as an excuse. I love the fact that he is an academy player and a local(ish) lad, and I have no issue at all with him being a squad player.
Opinions?

Rosso,
That's the other thing about Lingard - his work rate and movement does help the other players. You'd love to have someone like that on your team - tireless running, always looking to link up and get things going etc... Between Lingard, Mata and Herrera we seem to pop the ball around very nicely.
His contribution and importance to the team and the way we player is vastly more important than his individual qualities. It's way managers like him but 'fans' will be divided. Only a few fans will be able recognise this because some just can't see it. Similar to Carrick in his early days where plenty of people couldn't recognise the important role he played, despite being a mainstay in midfield and highly regarded by his team mates.

Fletcher and Park are two further examples.
If Jesse keeps up this kind of form, Jose will rely heavily on him. And people will complain about that the same way they complained about Carrick, Fletcher and Park.
I actually think Lingard will end up playing further infield in time. He'd suit a role next to Pogba, and if Mata wasn't playing so well there and Herrera is going to be used as a regista, I'd suggest that's where he should be now: offering the fullbacks, Blind and Herrera options, keeping it tidy and carrying the ball through the transition, and working off the ball to make space for Pogba and whoever is on the right when we're in possession; and doing the grunt work chasing and harrying when we're not.

One more point to the OP: his passing isn't 'way off'.
He's the most consistent passer of the ball in the side barring Carrick and Mata. You can argue he's not an adventurous passer, but he's tidy as hell.

His passing and m8vement are his two best assets.... so can't agree with the OP.
I don't think he is the long term answer for the RW position.... but he is a great squad player that pops up with big goals.

Lingard often offered great movement, in fact it's been vital in our good performances so far this season.
He was poor yesterday though, came closest to scoring from a difficult chance though.

I think he needs matches to get him up to speed so he should be played at every opportunity

This is the stock answer you get when people like a certain player who is underperforming.
When players they don't like are underperforming, they need to be dropped....
E.g. Ibra and Pogba are still settling in to a new club but I have seen multiple calls for them to be dropped. When it comes to the more popular players, they just need more time or a "run of games".....

He didn't play well, but his header was our best attempt at their goal.

I'd go for Ibra's scissor kick that nearly broke Heaton's arm.
Sure that was the best save of the match?

Rather than being 'dropped', I think they need to be managed better.
Ibrahimovic has started 13 of our 16 games. Only against Fenerbahce has he not featured at all.
Pogba has started 13 out of the 14 games he's been involved.

Fair enough but your sarcasm no doubt stems from the fact that people really do say this about their favourite players all the time!
