Thought I'd make a slightly different article as it's quiet on here lately.
Watched 'The Damned United' this morning and it got me thinking, who is the greatest manager ever?
Clough
Paiseley
Ferguson
These 3 immediately spring to mind.
Still currently managing you have Pep and Jose.
I personally think Cloughs achievements will never be replicated so he gets my vote. Thoughts?
Greatest Manager Ever?

Gemmill and Burns were on their way out of football when he signed them (Burns especially) turned him into the FW of the year
====
Burns £150,000, Shilton £350,000 - that was not a shoestring budget in the 70s I promise you that much!
Liverpools record signing at the time of the Shilton transfer was £200k for example.

Can't deny Forests achievement was good but in those days with only the champions going into the European Cup the Fairs Cup was often the stronger competition, with the exception of possibly Shilton would Don have taken any of the forest team the answer is no, would Clough have taken the Leeds players with the exception of Sprake because he had Shilton he would have taken them all because he was obsessed with Don and wanted to manage them to prove he was the better manager,
The Damned United was a good watch but absolute fantasy, the best part of the film to me was when Clough is driving into ER on his first day singing The Tom Jones song(apparently can't mention a word in the title on here)thought that was brilliant, which though Sums the film up.

My reference to the film was just that it got me thinking of managers of the past, I'm not at all claiming it was accurate.
I find it hard to put a case forward for Revie > Clough in all honesty, as unpopular as that opinion will be.

It is a results business and costing is all relevent to the times. Therefore I believe it is not possible to look past Jock Stein or Alex Furgerson.

Clough wasn't obsessed with Don Revie, Clough was a purist, he just wanted to prove you could still win and be successful without thuggish, cheating tactics on the pitch - which of course he did, and in fact achieved a lot more, through his clean, honest, footballing philosophy

Trevor Francis was the biggest diving cheat in the game at the time ............................. he ALWAYS tried to con the ref by diving ..............

Talking of diving, I think I read a stat once about F4nny Lee, who won ( ahem ) more pens in a season than all other clubs put together...?
