As a very junior Submariner I got a bollocking from the Coxwain for calling the Submarine a 'Sub'.

"WEM(O) Roberts, it is not a 'Sub', a sub is someone who comes on in the second half of a football match - it's either a 'Submarine' or a 'Boat"
