Murray World No.1

what a year he has had

posted on 30/11/16

isn't it funny that people are so blinkered!
So everybody has come down a level and Murray hasn't improved! Trust me, everybody has their time and Murray is right now. Federer was very lucky with timing until Nadal came along, Nadal was lucky until Djokovic came along, and now, If it weren't for Murray, Djokovic would still be the best player on the planet. How many Gold medal has Fed/Nadal & Djokovic won compared to Murray? Murray has two, the same amount as Daley Thompson. Murray has dragged British Tennis up by the bootlaces, the expectation has been incredible as has his Tennis! Don't dumb down his achievements because you don't like him! Daley Thompson was great, really great, but people only watched him and Redgrave once every 4 years!

Daley Thompson won it all, World Championship, Olympics, European Championship, Commonwealth Games, these didn't happen every 4 years.

Murray has won the same amount of slams as Wawrinka. Those are the hard facts.

He has won 2 gold medals, Marc Rosset has won 1 too as has Nicolas Massu. Gold medals in tennis are nowhere near the pinnacle of Tennis, whereas they are for athletes.

Federer was World Number 1 for over 300 weeks, Nadal over 100 and Djokovic over 200 at least. 100 weeks is like 2 years. Murray has been number 1 for a few weeks, similar to Marcelo Rios, Thomas Muster, Yefgeni Kafelnikov.

Murray is nowhere near their level.

Federer 17 slams, Nadal 14 slams, Djokovic 12, Murray 3.

I am not trying to belittle his achievements, I am saying, please wait a little while before you start to hail him as the greatest British sportsman ever. If he indeed is the best british sportsman ever, then we haven't been very successful at all.

There's the blinkered view. You point to fact Stan has won the same amount of GS. Yet you fail to mention the number of finals, Masters series titles they compare against. Yet use the lesser events to improve Daley Thompson's achievements. Decathlon >> Tennis. Not really comparable !!

You can guard Murray's record as much as you like.

Fact is Daley Thompson and many more British Sportsmen/women are the best of their generations.

Murray is nowhere near the best of his generation. Of course Murray has achieved more than Warinka, but achieved a lot less than Novak, Nadal, Federer.

So you think a player that's clearly 3rd best in his generation (4th if you add Federer from the previous generation) is the greatest british sportsman ever. That doesn't say much for British Sport does it?

You simply can't compare a decathlete to a Tennis player! A sport played by a handful of people not good enough at one particular event but ok in others! Its easy to be the best of your generation if the level of competition is very poor!
And being No1 means you are now the best currently in your generation which includes the other three! That is what happens when you are in the greatest era a sport have ever endured!

And no, it doesn't day much for British sport when you hold up Daley Thompson as the greatest. Ask a child in 30 years time who Andy Murray is, then ask the same of DT? Only one winner!!

This comment is so desperate and laughable it's untrue.

As for competition, when the competition was good, he lost.

How many Grand Slam finals did Federer destroy him:
US Open 2008, Aus Open 2010, Wimbledon 2012.

Djokovic, I've lost count how many finals Djokovic beat Murray: Australian Open 2011, 2014, 2016 French Open 2016

Nadal has also beaten him countless times in slams

Federer 14-11 (5-1 in Slams)

Nadal 17-7 (7-2 in Slams)

Djokovic 24-11 (8-2 in Slams)

Fed, Nadal and Djokovic have all peaked at different times, so I have no idea how you can say it's the best era of tennis and even if it is, the statistics above can show you that he is not on the same planet as these guys when they are on form.

I actually came here to congratulate him and you took it personally when I said he is not the greatest british sportsman ever.

Have to agree with Ronnie's premise to a degree.

Murray has done very well, i'm a huge fan, but facts are that he is just behind Fed, Rafa and to a degree Nole, though of course that might shift now over next couple of years.

As for best British Sportsman ever, he is certainly up there, but is he better than Sir Steve Redgrave or Jackie Stewart......having said this it is hard to think of many other names which really does highlight the quality of Murray's achievement.

Let's enjoy his success, it is truly well deserved and celebrate the fact that we have a great role model in terms of his work ethic, achievements, clean living and lack of tabloid stories.

Well done Andy.
