Shame for Valencia and Carrick but you can see why.

He has the ability with the ball but whenever I've seen him play he's not playing deep so I'd be wary of signing him and practically asking him to act as a sole holding midfielder.

Cabaye, Motta, Verratti, Matuidi, Krychowiak and even David Luiz were deployed as the deeper midfielders for PSG, so I'm still not convinced.

Talented player, though. Think the owner likes him and blocked a move to Italy not long ago so doubt they'd sell anyway.

Yeah, plus he's contracted until 2019 now, I think.

Although that'd probably just get Eddie W even more excited about the prospect. The dollar signs would be lighting up in his eyes

As Barry once said, if we'd signed Pogba for £60m, we'd only have got a £60m player. You spend £89m on him and you get an £89m player.

Memphis and Morgan future at Utd in serious doubt.

Has Bastian travelled?

I've said it before but I don't think José will replace Carrick like for like anyway.

I think he'll opt for a William Carvalho or Danilo Pereira type midfielder.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was just about to respond to Darren and say what we don't need, IMO, is a Carvalho, Kante or Danilo-type player.

Herrera this season has demonstrated you can have the best of both worlds by deploying an intelligent, disciplined player who also has the ability to contribute going forwards by recycling the ball quickly and accurately, as well as passing between the lines on occasion, as the deep lying man in a midfield three.

Sami Khedira, although obviously a more physical presence than Herrera, is another who has been deployed as the deepest in a three and excelled, winning the ball back quickly and cleanly with interceptions and clever tackling, before redistributing similarly quickly and then supporting attacks, without looking anything like your classic destroyer.

(Besides the general point, but last summer's Euros really reinforced my view that Danilo is a much, much better player than Carvalho if we were going to go for a sit, break up play, pass it safe-type DM.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I got dog's abuse for saying I didn't want Kante... even though I made it clear that I thoughthink he was a great player.

I just want to see us try to find or mould a more creative player for that deeper role. Herrera could very well be that player... he is tenacious enough not to get bullied and clever enough to position himself well... his 1 touch football and attacking play is already top class.

I think his sharp short passing game and energy is better utilised higher up the pitch. He's also a big goal threat from midfield which is also why I like him higher up.

For me he's just lacking when it comes to things like the quick switch of play to the wide areas/that long diagonal pass which if executed properly can isolate the full-back.

I've wanted a high calibre deep-lying playmaker for ages. Somebody who is a truly talented and diverse passer of the ball and can dictate the tempo and flow of a game.

Morgan is a funny one...Most fans were happy when we signed him

--------------------------------------------------

I think people had reason to be happy when we signed him.
_______________

Yeah that's my point. On paper he was a good signing.
There was no foreseeable reason for him to 'flop'. As you say, he had plenty of PL experience and it's not like he was a one season wonder before joining United.

It's bizarre that he is now so far down the pecking order that he can't even get a sniff of the bench.

In respect to Morgam and Memphis, sometimes a player just isn't the right fit for a club. Shame, as I think both, in particular Memphis, may develop into star players, maybe in Lg 1 Italy or Spain. The PL does not suit many players, we gave it our best shot and they don't suit our system, please get rid of Fellaini first to anyone who will pay his salary.

Not really the holding player we could do with is he?

We should be looking at whoever Juve are trying to sign and get them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

As I said, he seems to read the game well, holds position when he needs to, and makes a lot of interceptions,
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You've just described Daley Blind.

Yeah, I've seen that argument a lot.

I'm not 100% against the idea, but would just question whether Blind is quite sharp enough in his decision making and movement of the ball to fill the role as Herrera does.

He'd be closer to a direct replacement for Carrick, style wise. Whether he could operate consistently as well as Carrick has in the role is anyone's guess. But who out there does?
