What do you think about the timing of MS Dhoni's decision?

Excellent captain, great finisher and remained calm under pressure, which I do feel is a quality which a captain does need. Had many achievements and led India through some tough times. Was it too late...maybe, but I dident see a ready made replacement waiting in the wings.

Which brings me onto Kohli, does he have the right temperament to lead India? Its good to be aggressive and get in the opponents face as player, but as a captain?

I played for 1 captain who had this sort of personality, and when we were down he caused panic and made players nervous.

But you look at the success Ricky Ponting had as a skipper, albeit he was leading a team full of great cricketers he had that aggressiveness which opposing fans did not like about him

Good point, but that team was rarely under pressure, and dominated world cricket, I mean, we are talking about one of the greatest teams to grace the game. Players like Ponting and Kohli would thrive under these conditions.

The current India side are nowhere near this level, and no team since has come close.

I really do hope I'm wrong and Kohli turns out to be a great captain. His aggressiveness will pull the team up by the scruff of the neck in bad times, and keep them grounded in good.

It can go 2 ways, and the signs of a good captain is their temperament during bad times, and how they react in defeat.

I do feel Kohli needs to reign in that aggression a tad, and I am not sure how this will effect his own game.

As an Englishman I hate to admit but I am a Ponting fan. Class batsman, played hard on the field but didn't take himself too seriously and was very humble in defeat.

He did have an awesome side though and he wasn't the type of guy to chastise his own players.

Like is said, we will see how things are for Kohlibwhen you start losing.

We'll be absolutely fine - Kohli's "aggression" is overplayed by a mile. He winds up the opposition at times and gets under their skin but his talent is unquestionable. The transition to test cricket has been seamless and I have no doubt it will be similar in the shorter formats too. Also gives Kohli a good chance at stamping his team in early for 2019. Ironically similar questions were asked of Ganguly when he took over and he didn't do too bad.

That's true, be a test for him when the team starts to lose a few series, which will inevitably happen

I think Dhoni should have stayed as captain until after the Champions trophy.

Folks,

I understand about Dhoni's contributions to Indian cricket. All I meant was for last few years he wasn't the same player nor that amazing captain as he became too defensive or predictable. We lost games where we should have won easily in shorter formats..

I'm glad that he is available as a player & hope he gets his old mojo back in batting..

Greatest Indian captain but his time had come.

Of-course Don! May be it was little earlier but it's fine that he has moved on..

IMO good decision from Dhoni, time for Kohli to step up in all formats, Dhoni's place is safe for now, but he will need runs with the likes of Samson, Ojha etc waiting in the wings

Yup CF.. It's high time for Dhoni to step up otherwise he should give chance to youngsters waiting in the wings..
