So it seems that FIFA's Chief Officer for Technical Development, Marco Van Basten, or MVB as he'd be known if he played today, is the man solely responsible for nutty ideas within the game.
It seems like a brilliant job to have. From what I can gather, he gets paid lots of money to attend football matches and various swanky functions eating caviar and prawn sandwiches and ferrero rocher, all the while pitching the daftest idea imaginable.
Recently we've had the "kick off can go in any direction rule," the "penalty awarded if a physio jumps on the pitch and saves a shot" rule and the "clubs allowed to put their logos on corner flags" rule. All worthwhile I'm sure you'd agree.
So it seems #MVB has his work cut out, and in fairness he may have come up with some winners.
1) Penalty Run-In Dribble Things.
Not only are penalties being considered for tied group games at WC2026, but the idea of 25yard run in, 5 seconds on the shot clock penalties is up for consideration. If anyone remembers the early days of MLS, this was tested out here and found to be........odd
Look at wee Cobi jones try to score back in the 90's

2) Period of effective playing time.
Sounds interesting. His idea is that for the last 10 minutes of a game the ball actually has to be in play for all 10 minutes. Stop the clock every time it goes out of play, like in the NFL. So time wasting won't exist. Not sure why this should be the case for only the last 10 minutes though. MvB a crusader for not wasting time
3) Sin Bins
Seems to have run out of ideas at this point, yeah a sin bin for 5 or 10 minutes instead of a yellow card. As the man himself says, "It's more difficult to play with 10 against 11" Insight.
Oh and he also mumbled something about abolishing offside .
Seems like a great job. Anything we want to recommend to recommend to him for consideration? Keepers can't use their hands? Smaller balls for more goals? Hitsies getsies?

Crossbar challenge in the event of a tie in the penalty shoot out after five kicks each.
In the event of a tie after that both managers have to sit watching Mrs Brown's Boys and the first to laugh wins as they will have deserved it if they can find anything funny in that tripe.

On a serious note........he's just a big WUM isn't he?
There's no way we are going to see this period of effective play nonsense is there? Stopping the clock every time the ball goes dead in the last 10 minutes? That can't work surely?

Good idea, we've got Pogba so we'd be favourites every time.

Multi ball. Not even a question really is it? Plus, all league draws to be decided by a game of mortal kombat on the snes. As every disagreement should be settled.

My idea to make football more exciting is to give all the players adrenaline shots throughout the game. Who hasn't seen once one side has a chance the other side gets an adrenaline rush and goes up the other end and has a chance. Therefore, if the players have this adrenaline surge for 90 minutes, we are guaranteed end to end football. I have no idea what the effect of this will be on players' health but it's got to help liven up boring games.
