LSTD League Week 21 Results

Portsmouth 2-2 Aston Villa
Scorers: Lewandowski 13(Guerreiro), Lewandowski 37(Gundogan); Robben 43, Falcao 88 (Eriksen)
MotM: Lewandowski

Report: Portsmouth started the far stronger side and their aggressive high-tempo blitzed Villa but they could only keep up that aggression for so long and villa eventually found their way back in to the game. Lewandowski received the MotM award purely for his goalscoring triumphs but the award could just have easily gone to any of the centre mids who gave their all today.

Leicester City 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur
Scorers: Ronaldo 26 (Costa)
MotM: Thiago Alcantara

Report: Against a very defensively minded Spurs side, opportunities were always going to be few and far between but Thiago found space for himself time and time again and completely ran the game in the centre of the pitch - outplaying the normally formidable duo of Kante and Matic. At the other end, Spurs were simply pegged back for too long to be able to break with any real enthusiasm and unsettle Leicester.

Manchester City 3-2 Birmingham City
Scorers: Icardi 8 (Cuadrado), Turan 29 FK, Koscielny 79 (Sigurdsson); Rashford 6 (Rodriguez), Vardy 57 PEN
MotM: Cancelo

Report: Both teams came with plenty of pace and dangerous creative players packed in to the flanks, coupled with natural goalscorers, which led to plenty of chances created and an open game. While both flanks of either team had a fair amount of success, special mention has to go to Cancelo who managed to keep Nolito and Rose mostly under wraps, allowing Cuadrado to be more effective further forward.

Hull City 0-1 Manchester Utd
Scorers: Morata 48(Candreva)
MotM: Silva

Report: Hull, while certainly exhibiting real promise and an openness to play good football, have had rather inconsistent form as of late and it continued in this game with the more veteran figures in the lowly Utd side coming to the fore to rescue 3 vital points for their team. The game itself was a very well matched one with both teams lining up in a very similar fashion. However, the quality of David Silva was enough to keep picking out holes in the Hull defence that the rest of the team capitalised on.

Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle
Scorers: <tumbleweed>
MotM: Pepe

Report: One of those occasions where a game with a lot of importance and build up fails to live up to the hype as the defences came out on top today. Newcastle’s decision to leave out Di Maria in favour of a very obvious Liverpool bias will no doubt leaving some Geordies scratching their heads as the athletic trio weren’t at their usual standards against an equally athletic defence. Ozil’s disappearing act did little to help matters, either.
At the other end, Pepe and Godin were in inspired form to keep the potent Chelsea attack at bay, especially the mad Portuguese star who refused to be beat.

Liverpool 1-0 Arsenal
Scorers: Hernandez 90+4(Carrasco)
MotM: Hamsik
Red Card: Marchisio 52

Report: An incredible close tactical battle was, rather harshly, settled on the basis of a dismissal by a referee with a desire to make a name for himself. Both managers set up to 2nd guess their opponent and ended up in a tight stalemate with both teams negating the other’s attacks for the most part. Nevertheless, a red turns the tide in any game and Liverpool’s numerical advantage saw them able to have a little more freedom through the centre. They pegged Arsenal back for most of the 2nd half but Jorginho and Hamsik, especially, worked stupendously to keep them at bay until very late on in the game.

Wolves 0-0 Stoke
Goals: <yawn>
MOTM: Marc Andre Ter Stegen

A very tight game between two different systems saw Wolves control a lot of the possession with Mata and Cazorla looking comfortable under Stoke's pressure and the FBs offering good outlets to force Stoke into their more defensive shape. However if anyone was going to win this it looked like Stoke for the simple reason that they had the space to play into, with Mata and Cazorla a negative as well as a positive in this game, Kondogbia was often left with a little too much to do when Stoke countered, especially with two aggressive FBs getting forward it left Pedro and Ribery with space to attack into and the only thing that stopped them getting a goal was a sensational display from the Wolves keeper.
