‘I found a sad club,’ Mourinho said. ‘United sold players that I would never sell, bought players that I would never buy. I would never sell Angel Di Maria, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck. Never. No chance.
‘The relation between our true potential and the expectations we create, there is a gap. We are not ready to be a dominant force. We are not ready to try and win everything.
‘Because of the nature of the club, and of myself, we are ready to fight for every game, every point, of that there is no doubt. But there is a space between the general ambition of such a giant club and what we are in reality.’
Asked if he can restore their former glories, Mourinho replied: ‘Forget it, it is not possible, don't try to go 10, 20 years ago because it is not possible any more."

I am having trouble matching these two Jose comments:
‘Because of the nature of the club, and of myself, we are ready to fight for every game, every point, of that there is no doubt. But there is a space between the general ambition of such a giant club and what we are in reality.’
and
"A lot of people might say we should have scored more goals. But a lot of things are going against us. The boys are amazing boys. We will probably lose the game on Sunday. Fatigue has a price."

People seem to have forgotten how mind-numbingly awful Hernandez was at the time that LVG sold him. He has done well..since but that is hindsight logic.
Welbeck was sold because he wanted to leave as he could not be guaranteed a starting place up front, I believe. Nor did he deserve one imo. I'd rather have kept him as a squad player or let him go out on loan but the player himself rejected those options.
ADM we all know left of his own volition as well. Shame Jose never replaced him if he felt that he was such a key player for us.

Di Maria's season with us is the only one we've finished in the top 4 since Fergie left.
Man was a complete wimp, blew hot and cold and is a mercenary, but he did contribute more for us than given credit for. I'm glad he was sold under the circumstances of the time, but with out we wouldn't have finished in the top 4 that season.
We should be looking forward, and that means sorting the front line and midfield. Martial and Rashford should be banging on the door if the first 11, but start the season on the bench. Zlatan should be kept and Griezmann brought in to play up front with him. £60m+ bid for Kante is a must too.
Could try a French midfield square.

Why wouldn't every top side in Europe bid for Kante?

Fact is he's proven he's a top quality player and he won't be at Chelsea more than another season imo. Far better than players like Diarra, Song, Essien and other African defensive midfielder the league has seen over the last 10 years.
If I were a manager at a top club I'd tap him up shamelessly and tell him I'd make him into a player more highly thought of than Makelele at his peak. I'd pay him as much as the top earner at the club and tell him he's my foundation for the next 5 seasons in a side I want to win multiple champions leagues with. He could play for anyone.

Same manager that sold KDB and Lukaku to name a few.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
KDB and Lukaku were both untapped talents sold on for a large amount of cash.
both improved when they moved on to the point that most wouldnt have thought capable, there is a difference.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why does Jose have to have off the peg players? Where is his ability to recognise that untapped talent, coach it and bring it to the surface?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We're talking about two players. Virtually all managers have let players go who went to on the become good players. Even fergie did.
