"David Moyes' departure from Sunderland after a desperate season ended in relegation carried an air of inevitability - and it is only a minor blessing for the Black Cats that the decision has been taken so quickly after its conclusion.
It is a sign of how his stock has fallen that since he was awarded a six-year contract to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013 he has been sacked at Old Trafford, again at Spanish side Real Sociedad and now has a relegation and resignation on his CV at Sunderland.
And there are still two years left on that original Manchester United contract."
What a fall from grace. Man U to Sociedad to Sunderland and relegated
Moyes resigns

He wasn't Ferguson's first choice. Pretty sure the club tried Ancelotti but he had already agreed to join Real and Ferguson went to NY to speak to Pep but he wasn't interested. There wasn't really much choice and the timing of Ferguson's sister in law passing away made things difficult.

Aye, I'm sure SAF mentioned this in the BBC documentary a while back, he says there was basically no one else available.
In hindsight, even having Phelan and Mulensteen holding the fort for a couple of seasons until the right person became available would have been the thing to do...maybe.

To think we hired him, to think some on here still defend his time at the club....

While Moyes was clearly the wrong choice things are rarely black and white, I will always have a little sympathy towards his time at the club.

Reckon he'll end up as the Celtic manager some time though.

In fairness he's done the honourable thing by resigning
Won't be getting any compensation

You think but honourable is what Benitez did and stuck with the team.

Different situations
Newcastle wanted Benitez to stay
Moyes would most likely would have been sacked anyway. The fans looked like they'd had enough of him

I still can't believe how Ferguson hand picked Moyes himself.
______________
SAF always denied this.

Quite a change in direction based upon his post-match comments after the Chelsea game.
Perhaps resigned = fired?
