Not the typical fan favourite Roy of the Rovers midfielder and took a while for some fans to come around to his way of playing the DM role but it's fair to say he will go down as one of our best ever CMs. When you see the dozens of average midfield partners he's had to play alongside and yet still be as consistently good for so long it's a tribute to his longevity.
His signing helped us take a big step forward in Europe and he was exactly what we needed in CM after years of being sucker punched by decent European sides.

That's what I'd thought. He used to get grief from some for not putting in any defensive work. He certainly shouldn't be required to as he's so lethal up front.
He's too selfish to be a good CM, a spectacularly talented player but mentality doesn't suit. Bit weird to say he's a better CM than Carrick.

A bit weird, and completely unjustifiable due to a perfect absence of empirical evidence.
Theoretically, furthermore, I expect Ronaldo wouldn't have the discipline, patience, spatial awareness, control of the space around him, tackling ability or accuracy in his long range passing to do what Carrick does well enough to even make a comparison.
