I recall there being at least one great example of a player who signed a 5 year expensive deal, then essentially did the bare minimum to accept his pay check, without ever actually appearing for the team.
Can anyone remember who i'm thinking of, or does anyone have any examples of a player that is demonstrably in it for the money and doesn't care about playing?
I both need a good example for an assignment i'm writing and it's a pretty interesting phenomenon anyway. Win/win!
Players who sign a contract for the money?

I think Beckhams motives included his missus calling the shots, his Hollywood plans and all that.

Winston Bogarde! Yes! Exactly the name I was trying to remember.
Arouna - It's not that interesting. I'm just using it as an example of a 'principal agent' problem, where management and employees have conflicts of interest that go against the strategic interests of the organisation.

Now you put it in laymans terms it's much clearer

I'd be hard pressed to think that Beckham moved from madrid to LA for anything other than money reasons.

You wouldn't like to live in LA?

OP
Most players are in it for the money. Do you seriously think players would be anywhere near Man City if not for the fact they are trousering extraordinary amounts of money. Before the lottery win City could not attract a championship player of quality.

Anyone who comes to England, especially to one of our stinking major cities is likely in it for the money.
Why else would you move here?

OP, this is pushing the envelope a bit, but a fun read for when you need a little break from the assignment.
