Celtic were made to wait, but sealed a deserved victory over St Johnstone with 3 goals in the last 20 minutes.
Celtic started with the same XI as Tuesdays monumental tussle with Bayern Munich, Brendan clearly wanting to do the business before the 2 week International break. Whilst there were no obvious signs of fatigue as the game followed an all too familiar pattern, the Saints camping in their own half as Celtic stroked the ball around, I did feel that our execution was a bit lacking in the final third. The final ball or shot struggling to cut open the Saints back line- the highlight was for the most part long shots that you would expect Clark to make comfortable saves from.
The deadlock was broken from a move straight off the training ground. Armstrong's corner pulled back to the penalty spot and Sinclair guiding a controlled finish into the roof of the net. It was a well deserved lead but in a half where there were not a great deal of clear chances.
The sum of the Saints efforts was a free kick that bounced up at Gordon but he managed to keep it out and hold on to the ball.
The second half in my eyes saw Celtic lose their way a little, some slack passing and a period of time where everyone appeared to abandon attempts at structured attacks and took pot shots from everywhere. This coupled with some nervous moments at the back, it just felt like Celtic needed that 2nd goal and that is exactly what arrived. Dembele's lay off sent Armstrong rampaging down the left, his superb cutback from the left allowed Dembele to flick the ball into the far corner of the net and sealed an historic victory.
What followed was an armchair ride as Dembele's powerful running tormented the Saints defence and his cross would be diverted into the goal by an unlucky Anderson. Ntcham came on and produced a clinical finish to another Celtic passing move, a low drive past the keeper into the bottom corner of the net. It was Celtic's day and a 4-0 win in Perth is as good a way as any to underline your domestic dominance and claim yet another record.
Paul Paton is a be1l end but was powerless to stop Brown in a way that mattered. They tried to mix it physically but it made no difference to the result. I don't think I've seen a more isolated front man all year in Steven MacLean.
I thought Armstrong did well, his running off the ball gives us that extra option, he really enjoys and suits the fluid system we employ where his attacking runs enable him to drift into space. Moussa is looking back to his best, I just think that he offers more going forward than Griffiths does. His physicality and hold up play make us a far more fluent team. When he makes those runs in behind the defenders they look intimidated by his size and pace.
Sinclair scored a good goal but he looked like a guy lacking confidence. There were a few occasions where he could have turned on the ball during a break and drove at the defenders but instead he turned back, hesitated or chose to play the ball backwards.
Tierney is a wonderful talent, I love those runs he makes down the left, he has that electric turn of pace to make himself that yard he needs to deliver the ball into the box, the sort of thing that Sinclair can also do when at his best.
I remain unconvinced by Biton at centre back, I feel like he can be far too casual on the ball and there were a few scary moments that St Johnstone did not have the quality to make anything of.
Put into the context of our midweek efforts this was a great result and sends us into the International break in a good place.
Congratulations to all involved in this record, we will not see anything like it again in my lifetime I would think.

Good call, Silver - even if it does damage the old ticker

Steve I'm actually a fan of sinclair up here. He has been brilliant and has a rather annoying habit of filling his boots against rangers. But he has looked off this season but perhaps because he was so good last season he has become the player targeted by opposing managers especially as Dembele has been out a lot and Griffiths has saved nearly all of his good games for Scotland.

I don’t think he plays it safe
I think he is becoming predictable.
1. Get ball
2. Run at defender
3. Look for Dembele (if available go to 4. If unavailable go to 5)
4. Try to pass to Dembele
5. Cut inside and try to run through defender

This was proved perfectly at the 4th goal - Ntcham was standing waiting on the lay off and rather than Sinclair just laying him off he passed to Dembele who did what Sinclair could have just done himself
Great player for us but just going through a very inconsistent period just now. If he scored when he's playing poor though then happy days

Even aside from his goal, I though some of Scotty's touches in the first half were sharp and incisive - however in the second half, he reverted back to his more recent form, sadly.

This is a context point and not a jibe at Rangers.
If Sinclair was a Gers player he would be their absolute talisman.

Not everything Moussa did today came off - for example, there was an awful header in the first half and falling on his ar5e in the St J penalty area after half time
However, even aside from his fine goal and 2 assists, there were many signs that he was getting back to the levels we saw last season - and that is fantastic news

Steve
Playing PSG and BM takes an emotional toll as well as physical.
Hopefully we'll get back to that Brendan 1st season level.
