Asano was refused a work permit to play in the Premier League. He didn't qualify, he wasn't a full international so he was loaned to Stuttgart. Asano and Japan then destoryed Australia 2-0 to qualify for WC 2018.
Wenger described him as "a talented young striker and very much one for the future".
On 22 June 2017, the loan deal agreement with Stuttgart was extended for another season. Asano should be back at Arsenal next season when he qualifies via International Clearance, and a WC winners medal, instant qualify.
The Japanese culture is well suited to team sport. We have a collective attitude, very well suited for football.
I'm confident that Japan can challenge tournament favourites and potentially go all the way in the finals and win the tournament.

Waste of time - Yes.
Waste of money, probably not.
Same as Park Chu Young, mainly bought to target the Asia market. Marketing rules the world.
