Would Mustafi have dallied on the ball if he had any options. The only option he had (which he should have taken) was to hoof it clear. All other options were cut off. Wing backs high up the pitch. Xhaka pressed initially and into a position he couldn’t receive it. Look how far apart he is from Koscielny aswell when he receives the ball. Formation played a key part in the 2nd goal no doubt

Monreal is where the left back would have been in a 4. The midfield would have been pressed in a 4.

The United players pressing would have happened in a 4 probably even more than a 3.

You don’t know what ‘would’ have happened. Only what did happen. To deny at that moment that 3 at the back had nothing to do with the 2nd goal then you are mental

Where exactly would the extra man appear from for Mustafi to pass to in a 4? Full backs still push on, the midfield still get pressed.
If anything there would be one less option, as one extra player would be further forward.

Mustafi had simple passes to Cech, Koscielny, Monreal and Xhaka on. He took too long, simple as that.
That is nothing to do with formations or plans - that is simply individual error.

When Mustafi recieved the ball we had 8 players in our own half - United had 5.

Apologies, Koscielny wasn't on. But Xhaka was in acres. Monreal offered a simple pass, with Lukaku 10 yards away from him.

If you’re not sure who to pass it to at the back, just bang it down the wing or up front. No point taking risks especially against a good side. It’s simple stuff. But we do stupid stuff like this most games, just that it doesn’t always get punished. You can’t expect to win significant trophies when you make errors you’d be disappointed if a school team made.

Schoolboy stuff from both Koscielny and Mustafi for the 3 goals - and others didn't cover themselves in glory for the goals either (Monreal, Kolasinac, Xhaka)
