Our play

What the fack is the point on keeping Pedro and to a lesser degree Willian on the bench until we're down a goal?
If that's what you know is needed to get the forward play going, then why not do that from the get go. We normally had 3 forwards on the pitch and playing teams on the front foot, unsettling the opposition and if there are mistakes they happened further up the pitch.

This idea that we need to stiffle teams from the middle of the pitch has been our downfall. We seemed to be well on the way to developing a style of play and brought in Bakayoko to help Kante in this hunt and play approach to our game and then decide to just play this game where we try to sit on the ball without the personnel to do so.

I don’t get why Conte changed a system that won him 30 league games last season. I can understand it to an extent against the bigger sides but not against the likes of West Ham.

To try and accommodate Fabregas would be my guess!

Fabregas has been playing well last few games in 3-5-2. It's a good idea and option but we are restricted to playing it full time with such weak full backs and our 3rd mid having to be Bakayoko/Daniel Drinkwater. It worked vs Newcastle well, but I think Conte for instance, for this game, could have started Pedro from the start in a 3-4-3, carry on with his Bakayoko and Kante partnership which was no doubt the plan at the start of the season. It would also suit Baka better than the pseudo-forward positions he sometimes finds himself in in the current system. I beliebe at the start of the season hisnorihinal impressive performances was in a 3-4-3?

Is that necessary though? It wasn’t last season

This formation only seems to work for us against decent teams, congesting the middle prevents us from playing completely on the counter attack against them. But as we saw today against lesser sides it encounters them to sit in, making us rely on individual brilliance from Fabregas, Hazard & Morata.

I suspect this may be Conte not trusting Bakayoko yet, as he'd be the natural fit alongside Kante in a two man midfield. Which is fair enough tbh.

I'd love to know bluethruandthru's thoughts on this game. Wonder if he still believes possession is everything.

Conte likes his defensive midfielders a bit too much.

Trying to play Fabregas too often is what he can be accused of wrongly doing.

We are still creating enough chances to win these matches though. If Morata scores that chance today it's a different game and I think we would of went on to win the game today.
