DPL - Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury struck me as a very confident and accomplished team when I saw the first FA Cup match with West Ham. They seemed comfortable and quite able to cope with their opponents (who were probably not at full strength admittedly) in both skill and application. I believe too that the replay was also very close-fought and it took extra time to see them narrowly beaten.

You can imagine that they may well feel that victory in Saturday's game will be well within their scope, but their manager is cautious, concerned at the fatigue resulting from having to turn out teams not only for the FA Cup, but a Checkatrade fixture too, all within this last week, and at the same time recognising the threat which we present. DF in his turn rejects any possible weakness on their part, prasing their fitness and work-rate.

It adds up to a keenly fought game of good quality football with the odds rather in favour of the Shrews.

So, whilst I do not beleive that we will play badly or be heavily defeated I think we will go down. They have lost only once at home and seem to be very solid in defence. So although I'm backing Beestin for another goal my guess is that it is likely to be a disappointment in the end, say 1-2 with 6000 attending.

A fair summary PDX, kind of matches up what I have read on the vsc by others who were at the game.
With regards to Kongolo, to me it is inevitable tha5 he will blow hot and cold with his performances as he is still only a lad of 19.
He is improving though and given time and understanding the consistency will come.

Thanks for the reports lads

Thanks, Hound. I have not been on the VSC for a long time - at the time they were attacking players that I thought were not that bad. However, that was then when I only saw highlights. You may have noticed I'm more "vocal" now that I can watch most of the League One games live (frustrating that I cannot see Cup games). I feel luckier than you all, that I can "go" to away games much cheaper than you can. OK, it is not the same as being there, but I thank iFollow for allowing me to be so much closer to my passion for life.

PS: I spent three years at Southampton University 1963-66, and so I'm a little worried about my minor passion whom I watched at "The Dell".

Hi Azza. Just curious about who filled in at LB when Mason moved across to RB. Blair?

Hi Albi. It was Rowe. Mason went right back and that pushed Matty Blair into The right side of midfield.

Very comprehensive reporting - excellent and many thanks. The sound commentary did not seem to quite convey the quality and relative dominance of the 2nd half performance.

The highlights exhibit defensive weakness in both sides – surprising in Shrewsbury’s case. Defenders get in each other’s way with goalkeepers unable to reach the ball.

This is often a feature of the goals we concede with too many defenders going for the same ball and interestingly DF said he was worried about the number of goals we ship at set pieces and that he would have to do something about it. We’ll, that’s perhaps what he should be looking at. There is no useful strength in numbers when they bump into over each other and lack mutual understanding.

One thing never in question under DFs reign is the commitment of the players.

Well done to the cautious optimists, Yorkshire Lad and Azza, who foresaw the draw, but did not envisage us scoring as many as 2 away to such high-flyers.

Of course the opposition dispute the legality of the equalising goal. The manager has "seen no evidence that it crossed the line" which is not surprising since his ground-level view would be obscured by players and there was no camera with the assistant ref''s view from the side from which the position of the ball in relation to the line would be definitively visible. One of their players cites pushing on the keeper and therefore a foul which the manager did not see, nor was it apparent from the highlights view, but which would have been visible from the viewpoint of the assistant if it had happened. So which one are they going for? Perhaps it was off-side? Obviously it could never have been an legitimate goal caused by a mistake by the goalkeeper.
