Another Spanish Raid??

News of transfer dealings between English clubs and their Spanish counterparts have been on the rise and things seem to be hotting up even more as the big guns in La Liga look to pluck some choice fruit from the branches of a few English saplings...

See here:

"Real Madrid want Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager and have made an approach for the Tottenham boss.

Real Madrid are planning to buy Chelsea's 27-year-old Belgium forward Eden Hazard, Tottenham's 24-year-old England striker Harry Kane and Manchester United's 27-year-old Spain goalkeeper David de Gea this summer."

The EPL may be able to compete in financial terms but clubs will find the prestige still lies in Spain. When these giants come calling, head's turn and moves are inevitable.

Big fish financially maybe, but when overtures are made, few can resist the opportunity of competing at the very highest level within a league that attracts the best players in the world in the prime of their careers.

Looks like Madrid are also knocking on your door - Is there any truth to this?

Clubs in the PL building big new modern stadiums while their counter parts in Spain having council funded old stadiums.

Old massive stadiums steeped in history. The epl bubble will burst soon, and let’s face it none of our clubs come anywhere near as close to their European pedigree. Sure way me be rich, thanks to the outstanding marketing job sky did on the league, but those two stand apart from our teams both in pedogree and stature.

Part of me says their powers are on the wane, but then you think, how many CL titles had Barça won when they signed Cruyff or Maradona? Real Madrid were always a massive pull after winning the first 5 European Cups.

Liverpool should do more to exploit their European pedigree.

They have both. Financial and Prestige atm. Ancient history is all they’re left with at Liverpool

To be honest; although standing helps, when it comes to Barca or RM where Latin / South American players Iare concerned, I don't think that is the prime motive.
With South American players I think that Barcelona or RM are the pinnacle for them, regardless of current league position. The names of those two teams are ingrained in them and aspired to from the time Latin Americans are kids.

in the 80s and early mid 90s when serie A was dominant, many of the world's best went their not to the Spanish giants

even one of real Madrid's best players of that era..martin Vasquez went from Madrid to torino in the summer of '90, when he was at the peak of his powers

Madrid and farza will always be massive clubs, but its a mistake to think they'll always pull the v best players in their prime

for a lot of you youngsters who have no memory of what footie was like pre-champions league, pre-premier league, pre-bosman.....Madrid and farza have not always been the first choice clubs of the worlds best players

Martin Vazquez went after Hagi was signed.
Hagi was signed as one of the best players in the world after impressing both in helping Steaua Bucherst to the final of the European Cup and with Romania at Italia 90.

I know that DJ

but martin Vasquez was as I remember just 24 when he left and had been arguably madrid's best player the previous season...leaving Madrid then ..and to a club like torino..not Juve or the milans, shows the power serie A had in those days

The above link (in Spanish) tells the story of how Madrid made the mistake of letting Martin Vazquez's contract run down and how "his eyes twinkled upon hearing the mention of Italy".

He was, as peks says, our best player in a record-breaking season. Hagi was signed because we knew MV was leaving.

Incidentally, MV flopped in Italy, which at the time was considered the hardest league in the world in which to succeed, and where no Spanish player had made any meaningful impact since Luis Suarez in the 1960s.

Imo, even when Barça signed Maradona Italy was already the no.1 destination for the world's top footballers. You just need to take a quick look at the first team squads of Serie A teams in those days. Despite the limited number of foreigners allowed, they're as close as you can get to a who's who of world football in the 80s & 90s.

Just check the Ballon d'Or awards for those decades.
