Just checked back, other than a Scot who played a single game in 1948, he was the first in the modern era and also maybe the first Brit who'd broken the club's transfer record.

Yep, it's wrong. Strictly speaking, Johnson was Irish-born, but of English ascent and at a time when Ireland was still a part of Britain. Also, he was one of about half a dozen Brits who played 'round about that time. I assume they weren't all non-English.
