Hi Guys, Manchester City fan in peace.
With the attendance you are getting at Wembley why isn't the capacity of you new stadium matched to the potential crowds you could get, week-in, week-out - 80,000+ ?
I suppose it could be cost or maybe the maximum permissible size at WHL?

West Ham are overfilling their current capacity of 56k ground most of the time. That's why the stadium management are increasing the capacity very soon.
We will see whether Spurs' match West Ham's crowd.

To answer the original question, stadium size is dictated by
A) the footprint of the land to be used and
B) Local Authority licensing
A) it looks pretty tight as it is, if you check out the pics the ground is smack on th High Road so couldn't ave been made any bigger
B) The local council would never have agreed to much over the 62K now as transport link are seen to be inadequate for higher numbers.
Personally I think 70k would have been good but then you have the increased costs plus additional cost that the club would have have had to pay themelves for better transport links

The latest figure for capacity is 62,062 it recently crept up from 61,500.
It will be the second largest club ground in the PL behind Old Toilet and bigger than the Degenerates.
It is as big as the space allows, but there is possibility to add safe standing should that be ever introduced, which would increase the capacity further.

Billy - I've been meaning to post a thread on safe standing, as I understand it it would be 1 standing space per 1 seat so capacity stays the same, I may be wrong.

Isn't it illegal to have a stadium capacity excess of 60k within M25 apart from the Wembley for safe reasons? Dodgy Spurs probably bribed the bent officials to have their way.

Yes. The capacity was when built 60,432 with highest attendance 60,161 but capacity now lower due to increase in access for disabled supporters.
They are now renovating to add another 1000 seats this summer
