Pep champs league record

Without Messi

2013-14 Bayern 0 Real 5 in Semis
2014-15 Bayern 0 Barca 3 in Semis
2015-16 Bayern lose to Athletico in Semis
2016 -17 City lose to Monaco last 16
2017 - 18 City lose to Liverpool 5-1 in Quarters

What do we make of that record considering the great players he has had at Bayern and City.?

Yes, but that is discussing each result in isolation.

Failure over a longer period of time is what has prompted this discussion and the longer that goes on, the longer it will hang over Pep.

Not necessarily fairly, I might add.

I’d agree with your last statement

I think if we were to have the debate properly, then it wouldn’t be in isolation as such as it would also need to include if a team was better equipped year on year to progress.

It is tricky with the cl though as it is a Cup competition, so things will happen in isolation and have a much bigger impact than they would in a league over multiple months. It can take just one player missing a penalty or a wrong decision, particularly with the margins of the top teams in the latter stages.

Yes, I agree, which is why I defend Ferguson on this matter.

The only slight change of position is that some people talk about Pep as if he is some sort of magician - rating him more highly than I've ever heard before.

The CL record, in my view, shows that is not quite the case and whilst he's a wonderful manager, he has his limitations.

That might be some bias creeping in from a United fan as well though.

The people that do that tend to be talking from a coaching aspect rather than a managerial one as such (and it does tend to be his own peer group rather than everyday football fans) and is more about implementing something new rather than solely about how successful it is.

He’s got his own limitations as every manager/coach does though, a lot is down to personal preference and style of play. There’s certainly a couple of things I’m not a fan of with Guardiola.

Trying to understand his thought process on a game by game basis has been one of the most interesting things for me personally over the last couple of seasons though, it’s very different to anyone I’ve closely watched before.

I think you're giving a bit too much credit there.

Maybe some have thought it through - others are just waxing lyrical because of City in the PL this year.

In my view, they've gone a bit early with that.

I think the plaudits City and Pep have been given this season are justified, they’ve played some brilliant football at times and will eventually win the league with ease. Doesn’t mean Pep’s perfect as he clearly has his faults. But I think you have to admire the way he wants to play the game which is about attractive attacking football and believing you can go into every game and win. Maybe there’s a slight level of nativity and that has probably been highlighted greatly in the CL in recent years but he’s still won 2 CL titles which only Acelotti can better in the modern era.

He got out played and thought by Klopp (another great manager) but that doesn’t mean what he has achieved this season should not still be applauded.

I wasn’t referring to his time with us winston or people talking about him now, more in general over his career so far and across football, not just here.
