After three wins in a row, three clean sheets in a row and going up against a team with the third worst home record in the league, United of course went down to Dumfries and got absolutely pumped rotten by a team who have nothing left to play for this season.
By all accounts it was a proper pumping too and we absolutely deserved the scoreline.
Thankfully this has ensured that any potential optimism I may have gained from our recent good form in terms of the play-offs has been removed.
Speaking of the play-offs, results elsewhere have confirmed that we will have a play-off spot, although we can now no longer catch Saturday's opponents, Livingston. All that has to be decided is if we play Dunfermline home or away first.
Both ties will be tricky and even if we were to somehow get through both, I don't see us winning against a Premiership team. In fact I don't think either of the three teams have it in them to get promoted.
A wee word on Livingston by the way - what a job David Hopkins has done there. To finish second after getting promoted is a terrific achievement and all credit to him. You could argue his achievement is greater than Jack Ross' at St Mirren.
Moving on from the actual game, there was an interesting piece in the Sunday Mail with James Keating opening up about his battles with depression. I've criticised him for looking lazy and uninterested when he played, and he's obviously been out for a while, but it puts it into context knowing that he's struggled with his mental health. It's brave to speak publically about this, especially in the unforgiving environment that is football, and I hope he finds a way to cope with his challenges.
In other news, United loanee Tony Ralston won Celtic's Academy player of the year award last night. Apparently, after a twitter argument with a fellow United supporter, I'm apparently in a minority for thinking that Ralston has been fairly average for United. He's no doubt better than what we have, but I expected more from a player who has played in the CL earlier in the season. He's been okay for us, no more.
Mon the Terrors, even though we're scheidt.

The ship of hope sailed long ago
We've seen a huge improvement in the team since he introduced Gillespie. The defence has looked solid and the shape of the team is much better.
So of course he dropped him.
Just bizarre.

‘You could argue his achievement is greater than Jack Ross' at St Mirren.’
Well, you probably could. You’d be wrong, but you could.

Why would I be wrong?
Taking Livingston to second in the league is a great achievement. St Mirren had already turned the corner in the second part of last season and continued that momentum. Livi had to step up a league and perform and they've done so remarkably, with a much smaller budget.
Similar to Lennon doing the same in the Premiership imo, which is of course putting Lennon in the frame for manager of the year.

See?! I told you that you could argue that point. Still wrong though.

No such thing as right and wrong when it comes to a subjective argument

I don’t really follow lower league football, but there was a really exciting derby on at the weekend between the two big Tayside teams. I was wondering if you guys ever get along to top flight games, maybe having either of the two big Tayside teams as your big team, while having United as your wee team? I think there’s a few guys on here like that, for example the guy who supports St Mirren and Celtic, although that’s not really the same as they are both top flight teams, so there’s not really the same gulf between them.
I guess you probably just stay away from the capitalist top flight and much prefer watching good honest lads from the terraces, guys who work as plumbers during the week. They’re proper footballers. None of this full time nonsense. Etc.

Hi Glen.
There's a terrifically meme-able photo of Neil McCann on his phone smiling with Tommy Wright in the background doing the rounds.
I thought their spat was entertainingly childish.
