McClaren is an awful manager.......

I think he would have been a quite unpopular choice. He seems to be a fantastic coach but a very average manager.

Did well at Middlesbrough with a decent budget getting to uefa cup final and winning league cup.

Took an England team with plenty quality to not qualifying for euros - Croatia and Russia were good btw

Did well at Twente winning Dutch league.

Did badly with wolfsburg

Quit at Nottingham Forest

Didn't reproduce at Twente

Did well at Derby before it fell apart

Did badly at Newcastle

Did badly at Derby second spell.

He's got a decent sample size as a manager to be know what he can and won't do for a club.

He has been sacked more times than Tommy Craig ffs
