VAR

VAR refs advised the ref to review it. They didn't say it was or wasn't a penalty.

I think that system is worse. The video ref should make the call, too much messing about with the ref having to run to the sidelines to review something the video refs have already looked at.

In the German cup final this happened. VAR refs said it was a penalty then the main ref looked at it and said it wasn't.

They showed it on BT from numerous angles. There was definite contact.

Absolutely.

I do think the ref got it wrong, but I had to watch the replays several times before I made up my mind. On first viewing I though the ref had mate the right call.

You have to consider the ref didn't have several minutes to watch it through repeatedly from the comfort of his home, but had to make a binding decision quickly in a very high pressure setting.

Well, although not in the comfort of his own home, the VAR ref did get to see as many replays as he thought necessary tbf.

Even as a Chelsea fan I thought a penalty would have been really harsh. It was so close that Young didn't have time to get his arm out of the way, even if he'd wanted to.
On the other hand it was diving, cheating Young - so definitely a penalty!

Perhaps, but I would still cut him some slack. The system's under intense scrutiny over the claims that it slows the game down. He has to deal with that additional pressure too.

VAR is better than no VAR, imo, but it's still not going to be infallible or without controversy.
