World Cup watchlist

Now that the dust of the Wenger fallout has settled, we have quite a summer ahead to look forward to. A World Cup, a new manager - ostensibly Emery, who wouldn't have been my first choice but is looking like a good bet, certainly more so than the inexperienced Arteta - and hopefully a squad overhaul. I'm looking forward to the World Cup in particular because although my team (Portugal) won't win, we should see some interesting contests and hopefully dig out one or two gems who might end up making their name in the Premier League, even at Arsenal. I know they say never buy a player off the back of a good World Cup alone, but sometimes you have to take a punt.

I see us needing a new keeper to succeed the ageing Cech, as Ospina, capable as he is, never quite looks like a number one. We also need at least two new centre halves to replace the error prone Mustafi and the injured Koscielny, preferably one of which who can also play at right back to put the frighteners on Bellerin who has had an easy ride for far too long. Attack looks reasonably well sorted between Lacazette, Aubameyang and some of the fringe players, but we need to toughen up in centre midfield as Xhaka is not a midfield general and Wilshere's chronic injuries have made him fully expendable.

So although I'm hoping for some surprises and players I've never heard of taking a starring role here are some players I'll be keeping an eye on, let me know who you'll be watching out for:

Rui Patricio (Portugal) - Won the last Euros with his side and played brilliantly in the knockout rounds. Plays for Sporting so probably wouldn't cost the earth compared to keepers in some other leagues. Hugely experienced on all fronts.

Yerry Mina (Colombia) - 23 years old but already looking at home in the national setup as a centre back with 11 games and 3 goals. A unit at 6'5" and has had a handful of games for Barcelona since the start of the year.

Grzegorz Krychowiak (Poland) - A trusted player for a workmanlike national side and a mainstay of their encouraging Euro 2016 run. Never really shone at West Brom but a tough, solid defensive midfielder by trade who can also play as a centre half. PSG probably don't need him and may let him go cheap.

Aleksandr Golovin (Russia) - Set to be the home nation's poster boy for this World Cup. 21 years old, central midfielder who models himself after "Italian midfielders and N'Golo Kante".

Fernando Muslera (Uruguay) - Taller than Ospina at 6'3" and younger than Cech at 31. Vastly experienced internationally with a plucky Uruguay team and has won the Super Lïg this season with Galatasaray.

Diego Reyes (Mexico) - Young centre half with over 50 international caps and a league winner's medal from Portugal this season. Tall, skilful, has captained the national side on occasion and can also play in midfield.

Joshua Kimmich (Germany) - Young and talented full back who played in the last Euros and can also deputise in midfield. Boundless energy and drive, but would probably cost a few quid from Bayern.

Kimmich' contract at Bayern runs until 2023, he is a key player for Bayern and he is happy to play for them. Why not put Messi on your list, why you are at it?

Some good shouts in that list, I would add:

Cristian Pavon (Argentina) - made the squad over the likes of Icardi. Not sure how much time he will get but he’s an exciting prospect.

Thought I had more but a few their national teams didn’t make the finals

Cheers. Kimmich (as Thomas T. has made plain as day) is the obvious outlier but I'll be watching the rest with interest, including Pavon now if he plays.

Why the heck do Argentina seem to hate Icardi so much? Surely won't be long before he's in the Prem or La Liga.
